I took a decommissioned computer from work and use it as a mini server. I threw Ubuntu on it with docker containers for Plex and qbittorrent.

If you don't have a need, I guess you would pretty much just sell it or give it away.

I'm still using my i5 mainstream build from 2012 as my primary computer today...

lilaznviper 01-17-2022 12:19 PM

i try to sell as a whole but if no one bits i'll start parting it out and usually people would buy the memory pretty quickly and i'll just lower the price for the mobo/cpu combo to get rid of it.

This seems cheap if anyone is looking for HD

You can always donate old hardware to https://www.freegeekvancouver.org/

Hey guys, I need some advice as I'm not much a computer guru.
I believe my GPU recently died, had a red LED light up on the mobo, took it out and PC started up fine on the integrated mobo graphics card. Thats all the trouble shooting I've done, maybe not the best...

With the price of GPUs, is it worth getting an "older" model GPU; I was thinking a GTX 1070. (for around $400)
Or would it be better to get a "newer" card like a RTX 2070? The price difference is almost double, I would be purchasing either card second hand most likely. I only do light gaming, mostly older titles. But I wasn't able to run AOE4 on my previous card.

PC was built in 2015/2016 with all new components at the time except for the GPU; unsure of what/if would bottleneck if I got a "newer" card.
Here are my PC specs if that helps

OS: Windows 10 x64
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4690K CPU @ 3.50GHz
GPU: Not working AMD R9 280X
Mobo: ASUS Z97-A
RAM: DDR3 16GB
Storage: HDD (2TB) and SSD (1TB) drives

Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks you!

AzNightmare 02-20-2022 12:40 PM

GTX1070 is a huge upgrade over the R9 280X.
Depends what other games you play, the 1070 should be sufficient.

IMO, a 2070 for $800~ is too steep. I would rather pay a bit more to get a BNIB 3060ti then.

But according to this:
https://pc-builds.com/calculator/Cor...0AQ0UNlu/8/100

It says your CPU is going to bottleneck even with a 1070.

If you want, I managed to snag a 3060Ti from Staples for 839+tax, will let it go for that. Got it for my friend but he got a 3070Ti instead, the crazy guy.

AzNightmare 02-26-2022 01:35 PM

I haven't been paying attention to inventory in the past while, but I'm on the Memory Express site and see a few RTX 3060 TI and 3070 TI showing in stock at the Langley location. A few other higher end gpu's available too if you got the money.

MSRP has really gone up, but generally with inflated prices on CL and FB market, MSRP is probably the best price you'll get.

Edit: 5pm. lol, wow. Just checked again. Stock is all gone.

Razor Ramon HG 02-26-2022 04:13 PM

That Best Buy drop had 3060TIs for $550. I think it was up for probably a good 10-15 minutes with the checkout queue.

BB is back to online drops?

lilaznviper 02-28-2022 09:15 AM

you have to buy online and go instore for pickup.

I just snagged a evga 3060ti from bb drop last week

LOL, I just invaded someone while they were fighting the dragon boss in the giant lake. Feelsbadman.

How often do you guys upgrade your router? I've got an ASUS RT-N65U that I've had since 2011-2012ish? It's never given me any problems but at some point should I be worrying about security issues etc from something that old?

Razor Ramon HG 03-02-2022 05:14 PM

Not really, WPA2 AES is still the most common encryption and more than enough for home use.

I'd probably look at upgrading only if you needed faster speeds on WiFi since yours probably only supports 802.11n at most.

WiFi 6E routers are starting to be sold in Canada as well (expensive as fuck), but these will stay relevant for another 10 years probably.

SkinnyPupp 03-02-2022 05:20 PM

I upgraded to 2402 Mbps 802.11ax from 802.11n (and powerline) and my god what a difference. My local network feels like wired ethernet now.

My internet itself is still only 30M, but this helps with a lot of other stuff. Much better reception too, and more reliable than powerline which would drop connection sometimes.

Mr.Money 03-03-2022 08:03 PM

sounds like they improved with AX.

tried 802.11ac and distance was horrible.

i don't even live in a mansion but the signal was spotty at best.

mean awhile regular WiFi reached outside to the driveway full bars.

Vansterdam 03-10-2022 09:56 PM

had a chance to finally score a 3080 TI from EVGA last week but decided to pass on it.

was on a waiting list since last summer lol

gonna try and wait it out till next year for my new build

3090TI or na

Ulic Qel-Droma 03-10-2022 11:37 PM

lol 4000 series baby.

Mr.Money 03-10-2022 11:43 PM

^^^
suppose to be released this year and 1.5x performance over current gen right now.

we'll really see reviews when it comes out.

honestly 3080 can play everything at 1440p,let alone 1080p that is major overkill.

i saw so many people cancel their 3080 ti orders cause paying 2.2k is fucking dumb when bestbuy releases a 3090 FE for 2k with 24gb of memory.

also 8% gain with TI vs reg stock card... yeah no thanks.

unless you really want to splurge and money is nothing at this point.

lilaznviper 03-16-2022 12:09 PM

if anyone is still looking for a graphics card, i have a 3080 zotac white edition. Will sell at cost to anyone that needs one $1399 plus tax

!Aznboi128 03-23-2022 11:51 AM

I've been doing some research on them the past few days.

I ended up ordering a "Jarvis" desk on Fully.com and should be shipping this week. It was about $1,000 CAD and ships from Portland. The desk/motors can supposedly handle around 300 lbs. The downside is that the 2 leg design isn't very stable so there would be some wobble.

For $180 less and for local pick-up, I was cross shopping and considering the Ikea IDÅSEN legs with the ANFALLARE top too. I would have been fine with the Ikea option too since it would be more stable design based on reviews. Motors seemed to be a hit and miss, with half the maximum weight capacity.

There are of course the ~$2k+ rising desks with 4 legs which are very stable.
