Sorry, didn't feel like reading through that article.

I wouldn't bother with a cache. Although it'll make your overall drives run faster, it really can't compete with an SSD+HDD where you use the SSD as a boot drive. I just think that the SSD is a lot more useful standalone. I'd also avoid things like barracuda xt, since you can buy an SSD+HDD with that price, and if you really want to cache, you still can, and at a price that is a lot cheaper

SkinnyPupp 05-31-2012 07:43 PM

Using SSD as a boot drive, what else will you put on there? Depends on how big an SSD you can afford. But if it's just a $100 128GB drive, you won't fit much on there. Windows, maybe Office and a few other apps. Then what's your benefit? You can boot Windows really fast, and open those apps fast. Everything that is saved on the HDD will load really slow.

With a cache, everything is cached. All the programs you use the most. So if you open the same 4-5 apps every day (browser, twitter, messenger, photoshop, excel, whatever games you are playing at any given time from your 300GB worth of installs) they will load like they are on an SSD.

Or you could do what I do, have a 256GB SSD as your main Windows and gaming HDD, and have a normal HDD + cache it with another SSD :fuckyea:

I'll make it worth your while if you give me precedent over him (after all I asked first ;))

Bought the 3930k from retail edge
Cost total 215US shipped
Now which mobo to get

J.C 06-01-2012 05:06 PM

so i got a p8z68-v pro gen 3 motherboard and a gtx570 twin frozr iii power/oc edition, but my computer doesn't detect the gpu?
i tried the drivers, but they said there is no hardware detected and i'm pretty sure it is put on properly, i took it off and put it back on several times
what else can i try?

twitchyzero 06-01-2012 05:14 PM

^ did you plug the pcie power connectors in?

J.C 06-01-2012 05:15 PM

yup

twitchyzero 06-01-2012 05:21 PM

try rebooting the comp or the 2nd pcie slot on your mobo...it should show up under Device Manager in windows

So it sounds like you're getting video but not able to install drivers. Did you check for the latest ones from nvidia?

J.C 06-01-2012 07:51 PM

yup i tried the ones at nvidia and msi both say they can't detect the hardware.
i actually had it for a second under device manager, but it had an error saying there wasn't enough resources to run it.
after i restarted my computer, it was gone and now it only shows my integrated card

SkinnyPupp 06-01-2012 08:07 PM

Did you install the chipset drivers?

J.C 06-01-2012 08:37 PM

yes i did, and if it helps, it worked for a day before.
except my screen went black for a minute then came back and said my driver stopped working, then an hour later i got BSOD'd and it never detected it again after that
i can hear the sound on windows when i unplug my monitor from my motherboard, but when i plug it into either of the gpu slots, no sound is made when it goes in or when it comes out and both the fans on the gpu are running so i know that it is connected

dryjesus 06-02-2012 02:38 PM

Will also pay someone 50 bucks to help me get the 3930k off IRE. :) PM me!

J.C 06-02-2012 09:07 PM

so turn out my gpu was actually broken and ncix gave my money back

Crappy. So did you buy a new video card instead?

J.C 06-02-2012 11:56 PM

not yet =/
i got a really good deal on that card too, really wanted a replacement, but they said cash only.
probably going to look around for a used one thats just as good or better

sucks how i wasted so much time playing around the the stuff to find out it was broken =/

Those are all valid points but here's the thing. I have iTunes on my ssd and all my songs on my HDD. iTunes loads instantly, and then if i double click, BAM the song plays. The HDD isn't SSD fast, but it IS fast enough for basic things that don't require a boat ton of small files. Things like games and etc are fine on an HDD, since (hopefully) you aren't loading up crysis 2 every day, whereas you turn your computer on everyday, so the added speed helps a lot.

and also why not just go and get a 1tb revodrive:badpokerface:

You're testing speeds by playing songs?
Do you know what cache is for?

I know, but I'm just providing a real world example of what might be on your hard drive. Everyday things like songs, videos, etc are perfectly fine running off a HDD. Games won't see much difference with such a small cache anyways, so it's mainly the boot time you're after with a cache which is better on an ssd. People have preferences, just that mine is with an ssd boot:)

and correct me if I'm wrong, but if you don't care about boot times, you could always just use a ramdisk as a cache instead

Your N=1 anecdotal subjective observations are meaningless

Noctua NH-L12 Low Profile CPU Cooler Review

lilaznviper 06-06-2012 08:29 PM

which ones should i get

Mushkin Enhanced silverline 16gb 2x8gb 9-9-9-24
or
corsair vengeance 16gb 4x4gb 9-9-9-24

any preformance advantages of getting the 2x8gb vs 4x4gb.

SkinnyPupp 06-06-2012 08:38 PM

Not necessarily, but there may be a heat advantage, and overclocking potential (since you have 2 chances to have a not-so-fast stick instead of 4)

Hehe 06-07-2012 05:20 AM

Are you running on quad channel capable mobo? (X79)

The difference is marginal better on quad setup and very app-dependent. But if performance is what you are after, go for quad.
