That's one of the reasons alright, they cheaped out on us there.

Another reason being because of the shrunken die, you're trying to leech off more concentrated heat, it's coming from a smaller area.

Looks like you're stuck with a lower oc, a better, more expensive cooler (though the chip'll probably still run hot) or backing up to Sandy Bridge if you're dead set on a high oc. That said, do you really need the extra processing power? I'm more than happy with mine at stock speeds and a stable temp (40-50C idle or load).

Haven't built an IB based PC yet, but can't you remove the thermal paste off by removing the cover somehow and just apply something on your own?

I think as long you secure the die, it should be pretty safe.

Just ordered a couple of Xeon 1230 V2 off taobao

just a few hundred mhz slower than the 3770, but a hell lot cheaper!

Its not an easy task to remove the metal cap. Doing so would also void your warranty.

J.C 06-24-2012 05:19 PM

hmm, ap-15s on nf-f12s for heatsink/radiator fans?
leaning towards the f12s

I will try to remove it when my buddy gets me some IB freebies from their R&D lab.

As for warranty... the freebies are all ES... fuck warranty. :fuckthatshit:

Is paying $880.50 worth it for the Lenovo T430s thinkpad? Here are the specs:

14.0" HD+ (1600 x 900) LED Backlit Anti-Glare Display, Mobile Broadband Ready
Intel HD Graphics 4000 with Intel Core i7-3520M Processor
4 GB PC3-12800 DDR3 (1 DIMM)
UltraNav multi-touch touchpad & TrackPoint
500GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm
DVD Recordable
6 Cell Lithium Battery T81+

I personally favor the ap-15s, they're very good for the price in terms of airflow, static pressure, and noise. That said, the Noctuas do have PWM control which is a consideration, but I recall them being a little worse noise and performance wise. Which hsf/radiator are you planning to use them on? Difference mainly being between air and watercooling; great for rads but average for heatsinks.

tarobbt 06-24-2012 09:37 PM

Just picked up the Scythe Mine 2 for 30 bucks from memoryexpress :ahwow:

Going to compare it to the Zalman CNPS9900 MaxB.

Same twin tower radiator design as the D14 and Silver Arrow. It should be close.

Test results will be with 2 Scythe Slip Stream 140mm 1700 rpm fans in a push pull setup.

Total setup $45 :fullofwin:

for now a hyper 212, but a friend is upgrading to custom water cooling soon and i'm probably going to buy his h80

Decent deal. Looks like the one from rfd. Anyways Lenovo are good for build quality. However the problem with most of the thinkpad line is that the screen sux. Horrible viewing angles and low contrast. They're designed for business use so they don't put much emphasis on the screen.

Then yea, go for either. Make sure you have voltage control on the motherboard if you want to control fan speed on the ap-15s though, or you might need a fan controller. And try to pricematch...I see 2 for 20 or 2 for 30 deals on occasionally, and I got mine for 12 each (ap-15)

J.C 06-25-2012 02:27 PM

the bundle for them atm is save $2 on the ap-15s :okay:
i'll wait a bit

J.C 06-27-2012 06:15 PM

just bought 4 :D
$30 for 2 on sale right now at NCIX

I'm looking for a HDD just to store important documents and camera photos. Since I don't have too too much, I would put reliability > size. I'm looking for something under $100. Do you guys have any recommendations?

In addition, any recommendations for a graphics card under $50?

!MiKrofT 07-01-2012 07:19 PM

SSD's would be good since they're shockproof. Although for $100 you're probably only getting around 128gb.

For myself I store everything on a Network Attached Storage that has 2x 3TB mirrored as well as a USB 3.0 2.5" Enclosure housing a WD Black 500GB

Wow that's a lot of money right there, over $500 for the NAS setup?

The NAS setup was about $450 after tax. Its great since I store everything on it and can access it with anything easily. I previously had it installed on my desktop as RAID but finally moved it out a month ago when the NAS went on sale so now its separate and doesn't rely on my desktop being on all the time.

Current rig is 2 years old and has the following parts

CPU: Intel Core i5 750
GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 460
MoBo: Gigabyte P55A=UD3
RAM: G.Skill RipJaws 4GB DDR3
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB
Case: CoolerMaster HAF 932
PSU: Corsair TX-750

I need a new video card as the current one I have always cuts out and I need to restart the PC. I'm wanting more RAM as 4GB just isnt cutting it right now.

So my question is should I just upgrade my RAM to 16GB and upgrade my video card to something like GTX 570 or Radeon 7870? or should I just bite the bullet and buy a new rig?

The reason why I'm asking is with the new Ivy Processors out... do they make a huge difference? What about adding SSD? There are a few games coming in in the next 3-4 months (GW2, Dishonored etc) that I want to be able to play at decent resolutions.

Trying to weigh the cost of $1500-2000 for new rig or $400-500 for a few parts...

get another 8-12GB of RAM, 7870 or gtx 660 when they come out this month, and maybe a SSD if you have money to spare and that will serve you well for another 2-3 years (assuming you dont play at resolutions above 1920x1200)

no need to dump $1000+

hey i was wondering, i'm clocked at 4.6ghz @1.365vcore on my 3570k with max temps hitting 80 on aida64.
if i get a better cooler like the nh-d14 over my current 212+, would i be able to keep the same clock at a lower voltage and be stable?
