Finished testing Noctua D14 vs Scythe Mine 2.
Both twin tower coolers, but it looks like the D14 is better by a hair even with weaker fans.
Noctua D14 with stock fans and Nt-H1 paste.
Scythe Mine 2 with Kazemaru 2 1700rpm and Ultra Kaze 3000 with Tuniq tx-2 paste.
Test setup.
Intel i7 2700k
Asus Z68 V-Pro Gen3
G.Skill Ripjaws 16gb 1600mhz
Crucial 128gb SSD
Msi Gtx 560 Ti
Antec One case with 1900rpm scythe fans for airflow
Noctua was dead silent even at full while the Scythe was a tornado in my room.

for anyone putting together a new build
i highly recommend the samsung 30nm ram
low voltage..ultra low profile so good if you plan on upgrading to massive coolers
people get put off by the loose timings but you can tighten them and overclock them like mad...people have pushed it up to 2800MHz with x79 systems.
on z68/z77 most people dont have a problem with 2133-2400MHz

edit: scratch that...probably med-high settings for game slike BF3 with no AA...it's not even based on the kepler chip...from reading around it's somewhere between the speed of $100 desktop cards like the GTX 460 768MB and 550Ti http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-...M.72197.0.html

Got my new GTX 680 from the step up program after a 2 month wait, what a card. It blows my old 580GTX plus it takes less power. Does anyone have this card running on PCI-E 3.0? I read there's not much of a difference in performance between 2.0 and 3.0.

2 and 3 is barely any difference with the current hardware...even with SLI/CFX i think the difference is something like less than 2%..but if you have a ivy bridge cpu/mobo then might as well enable it.
So you just got your 580 before that? I thought step up program is only good for 1st 90 days

Okay guys, I've been out of this computer game for a while. I'm planning to build my next Tower soon and was wondering if LGA1155 is sufficient for video editing or do I really need to get the new LGA2011 chipset.

New prodigy is pretty bad, it fits an abundant amounts of stuff, but the power supply is very limited, it fits at most a seasonic 620W modular.

I need to get into the habit of backing up my stuff, and I was wondering, what would be a good reliable hard drive? 1 TB is more than enough, actually maybe 500 GB is already good enough for me.
Thanks

IIRC all the hard drives are all now made by either Seagate or WD...so just buy whatever green drive that goes for the cheapest

Thanks | check out the new seagate berracuda drives, the "power of 1" series where its 1TB per platter, it seems like its a made to run in raid/nas so should have better reliability than WD greens, but i think the minimum is 2TB i saw. but hey u can never have enough harddrive space

The 1tb platter simply offers higher density thereby gaining speed. WD RE series drives are expensive for a reason.
Myself I just use WD Greens in my NAS in mirror mode with an additional 500gb 2.5" usb backup.

Greens are NOT to be used in an NAS.
WD has a new lineup intended to be used in NAS - WD Red |

built a new comp for myself as a bday gift.
jumped on the mem express deal.
i7 3770k
asus p8z77-v
32G corsair 1800mhz ram
forgot what i got, umm, i think it was seagate 1tb 64M hdd
antec 300 2 case
thermaltek 500W psu, and enough fans to keep everything cool (2 120mm that came with the case) + 2 120mm cases up front to suck in air, and 1 more extra behind the cpu to suck out heat. surprisingly quite.
so far so good, no complaints, was due time for a new desktop, my core 2duo was needing an upgrade.
thanx Mikroft and skinny for the advice. |

If it is..not sure why buy i7 processor and 32gb ram?
anyways if you buy 3770K you're gonna have to do it some justice
