Good idea, I forgot about eBay. Thanks! I'll wait until I get my parts and then figure out where I want to run lights and how long of a strip I'll need.

I've just ordered:

Processor: AMD Athlon II X4 640 3.0GHZ (TigerDirect)
Case: Thermaltake Versa II (TigerDirect)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 (TigerDirect)
Memory: 2x Corsair XMS3 4GB PC10666 (TigerDirect)
Power Supply: Ultra LSP550 (TigerDirect)
Graphics Card: ASUS Radeon HD 7750 V2 (NCIX)
Storage: 60GB Corsair Force Series GT SSD (MemoryExpress)
Disc Drive: Lite ON 24X DVDRW (TigerDirect)
Cooling: Zalman CNPS14X 140mm CPU Cooler (NCIX)
Fans: 6x Scythe Gentle Typhoon 120MM (NCIX)

All the TigerDirect stuff was in a bundle that I just couldn't pass up, I know none of it is amazing but I didn't feel like spending a tonne right off the bat as my current PC is perfectly fine for 90% of what I want to do.

I save so much more since going laptop all the way =D. Can't really upgrade a laptop much after you got more RAM and SSD.

Managed to fix the situation by raising the voltage from 1013mV to 1025mV. Tested it at 772/2004 clock settings but I think it's also stable at its factory 800/2048

Bought this on Black Friday, been looking to buy this thing for months, but was just saving up money, and waiting for the price to go down....

hey guys, I m trying to build a new system and so far this is what I got..
any feedbacks will be appreciated as I m a tech noob and I m pretty much only building one where I can run two monitor, 1 for gaming and 1 for movie + forum etc.
computer will be running 24/7/365
also on the forum monitor I usually have many many tabs running at once as well.
and I really dont like lag or w.e. I like fast responses..

will this system do? or is it overkill?
(honestly I think 1200 is a bit much but if its what it takes to do what I m looking for then let it be.)

Patriot Viper 3 Series, Black Mamba Edition DDR3 8GB (2 x 4GB) PC3-12800 Dual Channel Kit at Memory Express

Does anyone know if these are any good?

Patriot
Viper 3 Series, Black Mamba Edition DDR3 8GB (2 x 4GB) PC3-12800 Dual Channel Kit

How do these compare to the Ripjaws X F3?
I was going to get the Ripjaws (once I find a good deal for them), but the price of these Patriot RAM is pretty tempting.

Although I'll have to buy it online as there is no more stock in the store,
so I'm not sure how the rebate goes. Cause I won't get them before the rebate date expires...
:suspicious:

And has anyone dealt with Memory Express shipping before? Are they quick?

twitchyzero 11-26-2012 03:10 PM

just compare speed/timing/warranty/cooler clearance
ME takes 3-5 business days

xilley your build looks good but go with a core i5 mobo combo instead...you won't make use of the i7 from browsing/gaming

AzNightmare 11-26-2012 08:06 PM

Does Memory Express not ship to the store when they have no stock in store?

These RAM have 10+ in stock for Online Store:
But Out of Stock in store... but their option to do local pickup is N/A.

They don't have a warehouse that ships orders to stores like NCIX?

But just to test it out, I chose another item that wasn't on a promotion price, and had stock in both online and in-store.

And it still had the "Pickup In Store" N/A.

That's fine. You can save a couple hundred bucks by going with a Core i5 and lowering your video card to a 660 Ti or even 660. If you're gaming on 1080p that is more than enough.

For mechanical drive, I would go with WD Red

so even with core i5 it could still achieve the stuff I want to do?

I just dont want to get something lower and end up needing to upgrade in a short period of time again.

i5 and i7 are the same, the i7 just has HyperThreading. So they both have 4 cores, but the i7 can run 8 threads.

hmm.. I thought OCZ was filing for bankruptcy..

SkinnyPupp 11-27-2012 07:44 AM

They never filed for bankruptcy, they fired their CEO and other management

If you want to save some money, you could get the i5 3570k (save $100, and you could overclock easily if you wanted to) for gaming instead. Also, the Intel 330 Series 180gb SSD was on sale for $103 @ NCIX(USA) during Cyber Monday, and $99(Memory Express) during Black Friday, so I'm sure you could get a better deal instead of paying $259. For the Mechanical HDD, I would look for a cheaper one as well.

that means no sale on their stuff.. :okay:

i5 3570k only $170 at TD

PM at Memory Express for even more savings! (only 4 left in stock)

Intel Core

It looks like all of OCZ's advertisers reviewed the Vector... Here's Anand's, he does a good job with SSD reviews

AnandTech - OCZ Vector (256GB) Review

Still waiting to get mine, but it sure looks promising

SkinnyPupp 11-28-2012 02:22 AM

BTW I am testing a 512GB Crucial m4 and performance is really good, at least compared to the 256GB drives I have.

How so?
I thought the specs are all the same, besides just one having more storage space.

btw, I'm just about to use my first SSD...
is it as simple as plug and use, like a normal HDD?

I'm planning to do a fresh windows8 install on it.

SkinnyPupp 11-28-2012 02:42 AM

Like I always say, a bigger SSD is always faster than a smaller one

Also I think there might be something up with my 256 m4. I am talking to Crucial about it now.

And yeah an SSD is just like an HDD. Just make sure your BIOS is set to AHCI or RAID, and if you are on Intel make sure you are using the correct SATA port with 6 Gbps

AzNightmare 11-28-2012 02:48 AM

noob here...
what's AHCI or RAID?
I heard of them, but no idea what it does.

I assume neither one is default settings. (and my normal HDDs are on a default setting?)
Posted via RS Mobile

SkinnyPupp 11-28-2012 02:51 AM

In the BIOS

Modern motherboards SHOULD have AHCI as default, but not all do. I know Gigabyte defaults to IDE for some stupid reason :rukidding:

ForbiddenX 11-29-2012 07:32 PM

I'm planning on building a new gaming PC around the i7 3770k (retail edge).

Would you guys recommend the motherboard that they have bundled with it which is the Intel® Desktop Board DZ77GAL-70K Extreme Series. Or getting something like the the ASRock Z77 Extreme?

I'm not in that much of a rush to get all of the parts since my PC is still working. Just trying to figure out what motherboard to go with first.
