Other nice functions will also include torrent download capability, file server capability, media streaming, FTP service to access my files when I am outside the house... not bad.

ive got a nas case (shuttle omninas kd20) but i dont use any of the functions, its still in the box actually (got it during boxing day), lol guess i should

somebody ram disk 32gb & post review....my asus laptop with 16gb almost feels overkill

SkinnyPupp 03-08-2013 01:14 AM

Yeah I might do that actually. The trouble is getting the program to stay there between reboots. Normally it has to be copied over every time you start up, right?

G-spec 03-08-2013 02:01 PM

Guys, I think my power supply crapped out ?
last month or so the pc has been shutting off by itself for no reason, like once a week....
I keep it on during day, and turn it off during night.

Just now it just shut off completely, and I turn around and see it trying to reboot itself up every few seconds or so... I see the power button the light glows red for half a second as if it's gonna turn on, then it just shuts off, then tries again and fails again....

This has to be the power supply right ??
need to know asap as I'm heading out in a bit will be around richmond would pick up a new power supply from mem express or ncix..... thanks

ForbiddenX 03-08-2013 02:31 PM

Sounds like the same thing that happened to me when I was doing my build. Would do that restart loop.

When I got a different PSU all of my problems went away lol.

G-spec 03-08-2013 02:38 PM

^ I built this months ago, been working fine until the last month when these shutoff issues started happening.... so I guess it's the OCZ power supply...... I do remember when I was building my PC asking for advice here, someone told me the power supply I chose was the weak point of the build.... told myself I'll just get another one down the road, lol.... well down the road is today I guess

so what supply should I buy today, what's good ???
something around 800 watts should be enough I guess... since this one was 600watt

What are your system specs?

G-spec 03-08-2013 03:01 PM

^ i7 3930k automatic overclocked to 3.8 ghz with asus bios settings, asus sabertooth x79 board, 32gigs ram, one 660gtx ti
from what you guys told me in here when I built this pc, all this stuff minus the vid card should last me at least 2-3 years.... vid card should be updated every 6 months....
anyway that's what I understood from all the advice I've taken in from this thread....
my 660 I do plan on replacing in a few months when Rome Total War 2 comes out, i wanna be able to play that game fully maxed out

I just saw this one looks pretty good, what you think ??

my i5 is clocked at 4.8ghz... im running Corsair H80 cooler

G-spec 03-08-2013 03:19 PM

^ oh ya thanks for reminding me, forgot to add I have the H100 cooler as well... and an intel SSD.... I dont know how to overclock or anything complicated like that, so i just put the first automatic setting i saw in the asus program, it was at 3.8 ghz i think.....

dont think i even need to overclock in the first place, only game I play on my PC is nba 2k13, and that's a console port with basic graphics

roastpuff 03-08-2013 03:35 PM

A good 650W PSU will do the trick. No need for 800W unless you are going to SLI.

Depending if you want modular or not:
NCIX - Buy Computers, Computer Parts, Laptops, World's Leading Discount Computer Store - $60/650W
NCIX - Buy Computers, Computer Parts, Laptops, World's Leading Discount Computer Store - $75/750W
NCIX - Buy Computers, Computer Parts, Laptops, World's Leading Discount Computer Store - $99/750W/Modular

G-spec 03-08-2013 07:35 PM

^ cool thanks, I ended up picking up your third suggestion the 750watt modular one...

so yea it works, turns out it was the OCZ that I had in here that crapped out.... will send it back to them under warranty, they got 2 year warranty..... and Corsair has 5 years.... should have gone Corsair in the first place....

now I'm stuck.... since my bios settings were reset, i'm in the bios entry screen here it's asking me to press enter and recover my previous Bios settings.... and i cant do that because I have a bluetooth keyboard.... threw away my usb one, totally forgot i needed it to get into bios.... is there any way I can get in with my bluetooth one ?

SoNaRWaVe 03-08-2013 11:40 PM

If I'm not mistaken, Bluetooth k/b won't work until windows boots up. Just borrow a friends k/b or buy a mega cheap one.

Alright, will be upgrading my graphics within the next week or so. Set between the 7850 or 7870 Tahiti LE. I play at 1920x1080 and like maxing out quality settings even if it means sacrifcing fps. Will the 7850 suffice for games like TERA? Does it justify the $50$-60 increase in cost? I'm maxed out now on my non-OC'd 6770 and average between 20-50fps.

I know the 7870 Tahiti LE is essentially a "7930" but would a 7850 be "enough" for my needs?

Renxo 03-11-2013 10:30 AM

7870 Tahiti LE best bang for the buck...

Akinari 03-13-2013 05:49 PM

So, I ended up dropping the ball for a Sapphire Radeon 7850 1GB for $159.99 after MIR, which is actually $50 less because I sold my 6770. I have no use for 2GB with the games I play.

SkinnyPupp 03-13-2013 06:29 PM

I am in the process of reviewing a 7870 XT and I will tell you that it isn't that much faster than a normal 7870 in today's games. And you give up a lot in power consumption and heat in order to gain that little bit of performance.

Tomorrow's games might be another story though... I am still going through data right now.

ram disk programs allow a disk image to be saved on your hard drive,so like a 32gb img file will be saved and start copying over once you start the program up...

Is there anyway I can get fire wire on laptop that only has USB 2.0 and 3.0? I see this cable but I don't think it will work. USB Multi Cable with Firewire

What's everyone using for SSD's nowadays? I went through a few pages, didn't want to go through 70+ pages of this build thread. I'm thinking of finally switching my gaming rig from HDD to SSD. I want something reliable obviously. From what I remember Intel and Crucial M4 are one of the best ones out there, are there any other cheaper brands that are almost on par?

Thanks guys!

lilaznviper 03-14-2013 09:18 PM

i only use intel ssds for all the builds i do as they have yet to crap out on me.

Samsung 840 pro series 256gb i recommend,I've price matched NCIX for $220
http://i45.tinypic.com/atx94o.jpg
:fullofwin: not bad for top of the line SSD....that is only 20 dollars more then the Crucial M4 & 5 year warranty vs 3 of Crucial..

overall, the 8 second boot up time of windows 7 is nice & any intense programs load fast as hell, def worth it if you're a gamer or do tons of video/photo editing....starcraft 2 loads quick & the rest of them do ASAP.

Cman333 03-15-2013 01:41 PM

I picked up an Intel 520 240GB for 200. Hope that'll hold up well.

J.C 03-15-2013 01:43 PM

I've had the OCZ Vertex 3 120GB for about 7 months now
Got it for around $80 at the time
It's fast and no problems with it so far, no complaints

samsung 830 (last gen model. if you can get your hands on them. amazon.com may still have them)
samsung 840 non pro and 840 pro. dont think for consumer use there is too much of a difference between these two
crucial m4. I got the 256mb last Nov for 169 or so from Memory express locally and so far ive yet to seen it dip that low again. hovers around 200ish+ now
intel 520. theres the cheaper 335 which runs on sandforce controller i believe...not sure on this one
Plextor M5. Read some good reviews on this. not the freshest in my mind so check it out yourself

also keep in mind size makes a difference in SSD speed.
ie, a 256gb is faster than 128gb is faster than 64gb.
the rate of marignal speed increase declines as we move up, but from 64 to 128 MAY be the biggest increase as far as i remember
