Are there any products that can wrap the cables up in say, a black sleeve without actual sleeving?

I just bought the sleeving material off Ebay. It's cheap if you want to do it yourself but comes from Asia so it takes a couple weeks to get. Otherwise you can use plastic wire loom. We have tons of it along with heatshrink if you need. We buy it bulk so it should be pretty cheap.

I used both in my case. Keeps everything black.

Not super pretty, but sufficient. I'm gonna sleeve the wires on the bottom one day when there's more free time.

No, most of the 'optimization' techniques I have seen actually remove a lot of the dependencies on the SSD, where you would actually benefit from it. Windows knows when you are using an SSD, and generally chooses the right settings for it. Things like deleting temp files, etc, are a good idea though.

Edit: I read that post at Anandtech, and I agree with that guy :) Make sure AHCI is enabled, and make sure you have the latest drivers. That's it. There are some caveats particularly if you are on an X79 but for most people that's all you need to do.

are there any maintenance needed for SSD to keep its optimal speeds?
ie defragging for HDDs
AHCI enabled so I assume TRIM is automatically working x64 win8

rk604 03-23-2013 02:47 PM

it should be automatic in win8

I put a 32gb ssd on my ps3 for GT5 but it didn't make a huge difference in terms of load speed. Keep in mind that a lot of the video rendering involves the hdd if you choose to install a portion of the game on the hdd. Like others have said, you are probably better off installing the ssd as a secondary drive for your applications and stuff.

knight604 03-23-2013 07:22 PM

I put everything on my ssd because I don't use a lot of space, 256 has lasted me like a good 9 months now

As long as TRIM works properly, there's nothing more to do. If you want to force TRIM a file you are deleting, force delete it rather than sending it to the recycle bin. This trims the spare area that the file took up, allowing for faster writes to that space. I tend to only use the recycle bin for files I MIGHT need to undelete... things like shows I watch, etc, get force deleted.

You can TRIM manually in Windows 8, by running "Defrag and Optimize Drive". Select the drive, and it will TRIM the empty space. The more empty space there is, the faster your drive will run. Some drives are more affected by this (Samsung 830, Crucial m4, drives with asynchronous MLC) than others (SandForce drives, Vector)

So in theory, it does help to keep as much space on the drive as possible. So disabling things like system restore, not using hibernate, keeping the recycle bin empty, etc, will all help with speed as well as space. Just don't go moving stuff OFF the SSD that would benefit you, because that defeats the purpose of having an SSD in the first place

For Win7 there are manual trim apps out there like ForceTRIM (didn't check link but that's the first result in google)

Anyone have a win8 DVD I could borrow? I have a key but I deleted the upgrade thingie that I had to install a new version, and now that I've got my SSD installed and initialized, I need to install m'damn OS on it. Stupid lack of DVD.

lilaznviper 03-24-2013 02:43 PM

I may have an oem / retail dvd for windows 8 at work i'll have to check on monday

Akinari 03-25-2013 06:40 AM

Received a massive static shock when attempting to turn on my PC today. Then it wouldn't turn on. Thought either the PSU or mobo was done for, but I disconnected the main power cable and all was fixed

Why not just use a virtual driver to install?

Needed the ISO. Scored a bootable USB from a friend, had to fight with it a bit but I'm up and running again.

AND ERMAGERD MAH SSD IS SO SMOOOOOOOOOOV. Kicking myself for not having done this earlier.

same... how can i clean up my SSD? i only have 120 as well, so every byte counts lol

lilaznviper 03-26-2013 03:22 PM

turning off hibernation and moving your page file to another drive if you have a lot of memory.

That's pretty much you're only options, aside from manually purging files.

Soooo my dads computer, which is still running Windows 7, after a reboot, is telling him that his copy of Windows is not genuine and wants him to enter the product key when he does the computer tells him the key isn't genuine and gives him a link to purchase Windows

I went to Genuine Microsoft Software and it tells me that his windows isn't genuine and does the same (gives a link to buy windows)

the thing is I bought that windows 7 pro key for him years ago

there's no other solution offered by Microsoft so that's why I'm asking here, any ideas?

I don't mind installing windows 8 on his computer the thing is I'd like to know why windows is doing this... is it a virus? i dont want to install win8 on his computer only to have the same thing happen all over again

edit: found a source to solve my problem so just ignore the above i suppose :)

So about that OCZ power supply that crapped out on me the other week.... their warranty return process is so lame, they asked me to do about a dozen things involving, pdf's scanning, faxing.....

I was just so annoyed, I'd rather lose $80 then do all that shit, and reminded them of how a real company does warranty returns... When my Logitech mouse had a battery problem where it would drain way too fast, they sent me a brand new mouse all they asked for is the serial number, and they let me keep the old one which works just fine wired up.
They did the same thing for 2 other peripherals of theirs I had, that's how it's done..... maybe Logitech spoiled me with their methods..... but are warranty returns all supposed to be this complicated ?

won't be buying OCZ again, didn't do enough research into their power supplies they only offer 2 years warranty, other better quality ones offer 5, that would have tipped me off to their quality if I had known about it
