Might upgrading my rig probably end of May. Should I wait for Haswell to come out and the 700 Nvidia series?

Planning to run

Fractal R4
i5
660ti ( or 660)
Cosair H100i
8gb ram
2TB WD Red with 128gb SSD
650Watt

What do you guys think of the build?

Most likely wont be OCing, unless i get my hands on a i7

twitchyzero 04-16-2013 03:15 PM

if you aren't OCing don't wait for haswell and save $100 from not buying the h100i and instead put that money towards an enthusiast-level video card.

GTX 700's may or may not come...we'll probably know by early June though (Computex)

I'd say, what are the specs of your current PC? If you can afford to wait a little longer, why don't you wait it out and see how Haswell performs, and see what kind of price cuts the new CPU will result in for the stuff that you can currently buy?

That's why I've got several "travel" laptops that I don't have much use for that I got from friends after they ignored my advice and bought a new computer just to check facebook and watch cat videos on YouTube.

to add the cherry on top... just got a call from my dad and he decided to put the computer together himself and it won't post just goes into a cycle of restarting

Currently running a e8400 OCed and 8800GT SLI, runs fine, but some games can't run smoothly on high settings. and computer is getting really hot. If i'm planning to keep it, i might need to lap the CPU.

Put that extra 100$ towards a 670? and maybe a CoolMaster 212?

Pretty much stuck between the Schiit Modi and the ODAC now lol. Head-Fi isn't being very helpful at the moment.

Intel products don't get a price cut even when a new gen is out. Haswell is out in june but a very modest increase in actual compute performance...it'll only be a worthy buy if you overclock or use onboard graphics.

Ask him if that 0fps is better than the 40fps he was getting beforehand. On the plus side maybe this will give you time to fix his other PC so he can sell/return all this other crap he doesn't need... that's gotta be a couple grand in parts (too lazy to check). Or did he reuse his case and stuff?

StylinRed 04-16-2013 10:54 PM

lol i think he used the same case not sure though he didn't mention a new case, sigh

underscore 04-17-2013 06:08 AM

underscore 04-17-2013 06:08 AM

I'll take his old "junk" if he doesn't want it haha

FerrariEnzo 04-17-2013 06:32 AM

^ lol I like 40fps....

:okay: Still using my AMD build 2 years back (AMD 1055XT OC to 3.2GHz, 8 GM of Ram, AMD 6950 2GB, 2TB HD.) runs fine on BF3. Ask your dad if he is interested to trade his new PC for mine

StylinRed 04-17-2013 02:50 PM

lol ive been wanting to make a dedicated htpc (instead of one of my laptops)

think i'll snatch those old parts :fullofwin: although it'll be overkill for an htpc

Akinari 04-17-2013 04:55 PM

Impulse buy

Fostex PM0.4n 36W 4" Active Nearfield Studio PM0.4N-W B&H

http://www.fostexinternational.com/p..._013-thumb.jpg

$159.99 shipped to Blaine WA. Cheapest price I could find online, cheaper than some places are offering for their open box units. Should sound godly with my new LME49720HA opamp on my sound card. Can't wait :fullofwin: Though, I will need to pickup speaker stands as nearfield setups need to be ear-level to sound "right"

Kind of debating whether or not I still need an ODAC or I should just stick with my internal sound card setup for now. I guess if I can pickup an ODAC for cheap later on, I will.

On a side note, why the hell are Audioengine's A2 speakers priced so high? They definitely are not worth $200...anything from Fostex or even Behringer beats the living hell out of anything Audioengine makes.

J.C 04-17-2013 05:05 PM

audio engine is known to be overpriced
sick speakers, sometimes i wish i got monitors instead of headphones

Akinari 04-17-2013 05:17 PM

I have the luxury of being able to blast music in my room without my parents complaining :troll: My mum blasts her music on our home theatre system sometimes so she can't complain if I do the same on speakers not even half the size of our home theatre speakers lol.

StylinRed 04-17-2013 05:36 PM

was going to suggest why you didn't look at Audio Engine instead :P nothing but great reviews it seems but you already looked into it :/

or some Yamaha's http://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-MSP3-Powered-Monitor-Loudspeaker/dp/B0002GML1S/ref=pd_sxp_f_pt

edit: and i hear these are quite good too http://www.theaudioinsider.com/manuf...6d2233c4790e2c

watch all the things?

Since it'd be so powerful it'd be cool if there was a way to enable a single HTPC to connect to two TV's and act as two independent players.

StylinRed 04-17-2013 05:55 PM

yeah thats why i was looking at a case which can handle a lot of hard drives until i figured out i dont need that many hard drives (rip all my BDs)

it would be nice to get multiple tv/device support but not necessary since its just one in my bedroom and one in the living room... make it a NAS box maybe? or run another hdmi from the htpc to the bedroom

i was looking at one of these cases

edit: and i hear these are quite good too Swan

I've heard Audioengines, my friend had A2s and I used to borrow them all the time. They sound great after a very extensive burn-in period of around 200-300 hours, but before that it has an overall very dark (not in the good "audiophile" dark way either) and somewhat veiled sound signature, can be muddy at times as well and not articulate enough. I've listened to the Fostex before at Tom Lee and although they weren't burnt in either, it sure sounded a hell of a lot crisper and clearer in the highs and mid-range (particularly vocals) than the A2s. Maybe it's just me, but I find that Japanese audio companies tend to make their gear produce much brighter sound signatures, not just speakers too, headphones as well including AT, JVC, Sony, etc.

A2s aren't bad, but they're not worth $200. Perhaps if you could find a used set for $150 or less, it'd justify the cost more.

As for actual studio monitors, I'm not doing any recording or actual professional work so I'd prefer not to spend the cost of a pair of almost-studio-monitors on just ONE actual studio monitor, like Yamahas (HS80 sounds godly)

twitchyzero 04-17-2013 11:05 PM

$12...I'm sold.
