Yes if you RAID stripe them together.

Samsung 840 Pro gets my vote over HyperX.

You can hook up both 120GB SSD and RAID them, and they will look great on benchmarks. But the real world difference wouldn't be that much different than a single SSD. In fact, since most 240GB SSD are a bit faster than their 120GB versions, I don't see why you'd want to take up 2 SATA slots instead of going with a single bigger SSD.

FerrariEnzo 06-01-2013 11:06 PM

lol coz the hyperx was on sale and cheaper then the 240gb version...

but mostly because im just curious, thats all..

when you RAID SSD drives, I believe you lose TRIM

All too true. Which is yet another reason why you are better off just getting a larger capacity SSD.

Bought the HyperX. First SSD, and I'm amazed with the speeds! (On Sata2 too).

Hmm... came across this SanDisk blowout offer on Amazon.com (US site) that is only valid for today:

SanDisk Deal of the Day

The 240GB SSD deal seems quite attractive:

http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Extreme-2-5-Inch-Solid-SDSSDX-240G-G25/dp/B006EKJ8UI/ref=br_lf_m_1001225461_1_3_ttl?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&s=pc&pf_rd_p=1560989522&pf_rd_s=center-3&pf_rd_t=1401&pf_rd_i=1001225461&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0EFSZYPHR1KA66160YQ0
Yes, it is "only" running on a SandForce SF-2281, but at $0.625/GB, I am finding it very difficult to resist the temptation to buy...

Hmm...

twitchyzero 06-03-2013 03:15 PM

^ I bought it a year ago for $10 more
great bang for buck but when it first launched TRIM was broken...they patched it up after a few months with a new FW

I'd say it is entirely up to you. They are both running the same SandForce SF-2281 controller, but the SanDisk is a bigger drive, and so the IO ops will be slightly faster. Also, the SanDisk has more storage space. But it is more $$, and you'll have to have it shipped to Point Roberts for pick up if you don't want to get stuck with international shipping.

StylinRed 06-03-2013 03:32 PM

Thanks, yeah I looked at a review noticed they're basically the same and it comes down to $70 more ah well

only using it in my htpc for the os so i guess the hyperx is already good enough

edit: any recommendations on a sata2 expansion card? everything i seem to find seems to have horrible/mixed reviews :/ just need 2-4 more sata slots

Hmm...

Not sure what you mean by 'only'. SF2281 is pretty much the best consumer SSD controller that currently exists. None are as consistent and none handle steady state as well.

Aren't the current crop of top consumer drives using newer controllers such as Indilinx Barefoot 3 (OCZ Vector), Samsung MDX (840 Pro), LAMD LM87800 (Corsair Neutron GTX, Seagate 600 Pro), etc.? SF2281 isn't slow. But I wouldn't call it the latest and greatest either.

Some have advantages, some have disadvantages.

Barefoot 3 is good, especially at keeping access times down while in steady state. However the throughput consistency is not as good as SF2281 at steady state.

I know based on Anand's review Samsung MDX's consistency is horrible (his site is the only other one to test for this), but he doesn't do a steady state curve test so I can't comment on that. If it's anything like the older Samsung controllers, it will be bad too. (edit: HardOCP tests for it, and it is as bad, as I expected)

LM87800 consistency is great, but again I don't know how it handles steady state.

Fresh state performance tests don't mean much if the drive loses its performance as soon as it hits a steady state. And some drives handle this much better than others... It's crazy to me that the 'big sites' don't test for this. Is it because a single test takes at least 3-4 hours to run? I don't know... (edit: I checked HardOCP for this too, and the steady state performance looks good)

In my experience, SandForce drives handle it best of all, at least on the consumer drive side of things. It looks like the LAMD controllers are good too.

And for the record, I never called it "the latest and greatest". It is an older controller, and others (well at least one) has caught up. It is 'one of' the greatest, and because it is older, prices are usually lower than the other, newer controllers.
