I don't understand why people are so surprised to see Hyundai up there. This is a totally different company from where it was even 5 years ago. Their products are just as competitive as anybody in their respected categories if not better.

I am not just talking up the company because I work for them. I don't. All the hard data do suggest they are having immense success. They were the first company to offer - Hyundai Assurance - where they provide refund for your new car if you lose your job within 1 year purchasing it. This is just one example of the innovative approach that is taking place at Hyundai. People are not given them enough credit at this point. But sooner or later I think people will see the value of their offerings.

Bob Lutz: “A while ago, many experts thought, the race for the top position in the auto business would be a dead heat between GM, Toyota, and Honda. This has changed. The Big Three are now GM, Volkswagen, and Hyundai. Toyota is in decline. The Japanese lost their bullet-proof quality image. Their cars aren’t especially pretty. Their driving dynamics is below the level of the best European and American cars.

The part about the JDMs not being pretty is SOOOOO true...

I'm surprised to see Hyundai on the list, because compared to GM and VW who own multiple brands, Hyundai only has the one.

ok so...who owns Kia???

"Hyundai Motor Group: The group was formed through the purchase of 51% of South Korea's second-largest car company, Kia Motors, by Hyundai Motor Company in 1998."

I totally agree about Toyota. It's almost like they got to the top and decided they didn't need to work as hard anymore. People will buy our shit no matter what we make it look like.

There is nothing at a Toyota dealership that would make me want to go there.

When we take our xterra in for service, I always go and take a look around in the show room. Oh look! GTR. Fuck-keep that one locked hey. Oh look! 350Z-get inside, play with the buttons and think it would be nice to trade and drive around in a new sports car blah blah blah.

Then I go and check out the Murano and shit that would actually be useful in my life. And one of these days, I may get inspired to say-fuck the old heap..I'll take this!

And in my mind, is always that good little internal woody I got looking at the GTR...and it affects my mind.

At Toyota? OH look! The Prius-it saves gas! But not as much as everyone thinks! And oh! When the batteries die, they are a toxic waste land and a fortune to replace! But people bought it because Toyota told them to.

You will see them learn, when they come out with a completely non-practical sports car with no trunk, shitty head room and stiff suspension-and you can nod and say, "they aren't so confident they are #1 anymore"

I basically would rather have a Hyundai model over the japanese models anyday. The new veloster has better gas mileage than a CRZ and it's not even hybrid!

Toyota or Honda are defintely not going away. They both makes tons of cash, have war chest bank acct, and have a loyal following. I agree, I think they have both lost their performance soul. In 20yrs, will cars become appliances to the general population?

This.

Coming from an Acura owner, if I were looking for a new brand new mid-size, I'd personally take the new Sonata over a new Camry or Accord in a heartbeat.

And this.

To expand on this one, people will always buy Toyotas and Hondas simply because of their reputation. It automatically clicks as the "safer" choice. Which is completely understandable. I mean, they built their rep from the ground up. But what used to be will not always be. And only time will change that.

Though IMO, it seems like Toyota and Honda are focusing more on Lexus and Acura. Their luxury counterparts don't seem to be falling behind much, if at all.
