LAS VEGAS (AP) – Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon died Sunday in a fiery 15-car wreck at Las Vegas Motor Speedway when his car flew over another on Lap 13 and smashed into the wall just outside turn 2.
Wheldon was 33. Drivers were told of Wheldon's death in a meeting about two hours after the fiery, smoky crash that many drivers said was the worst they had ever seen.
The British driver won the Indianapolis 500 twice, including this year.
"IndyCar is very sad to announce that Dan Wheldon has passed away from unsurvivable injuries," IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family today. IndyCar, its drivers and owners, have decided to end the race. In honor of Dan Wheldon, the drivers have decided to do a five-lap salute to in his honor."
Three other drivers, including championship contender Will Power, were hurt in the pileup.
WTF? Seriously? That's horrible - 2 weeks before the 12th anniversary of Greg Moore's crash too.
After all these years, it still makes me really sad to think of Greg Moore's accident. I still can't bring myself to watch it after seeing Greg die live on TV.

RIP Dan Wheldon
That crash looked worse than Greg Moore's for some reason. Maybe it's the pileup that made it bad.
Wheldon, like many other professional racers (past and present), knew the dangers of the sport, but did what he loved to do. All the best to his family and friends.
ya, always gotta hang out in the pit area during qualifying at the vancouver molson indy....then after the races they usually gave me the used tires, made tables out of them.
i remember we would play Indy Cart series on the console, and he would let me play as him and he would be Patrick Carpentier.

That's pretty cool.
But yeah, brutal wreck... so much happening in a span of just a few seconds.
At least three cars took flight after running up the backsides of other cars.
Much different from Moore's wreck, which was just a single car losing control.

Formula One fraternity pays tribute to Wheldon
The Formula One paddock in Korea was in sombre mood on Monday after it awoke to the sad news of British driver Dan Wheldon’s death following a huge, multi-car accident in Sunday’s IndyCar season finale in Las Vegas, USA.
Although Wheldon, 33, never made it to Formula One, he did race with many of its current stars as he made his way through the motorsport ranks, en route to his two Indianapolis 500 wins and his 2005 IndyCar title.
“I have so many good memories of racing with Dan in the early 90's, a true fighter,” said McLaren’s Jenson Button, who competed against Wheldon in Formula Ford and Formula Three. “We've lost a legend in our sport but also a great guy. I can't begin to imagine what his family are going through and my thoughts are with them at this very difficult time.”
“This is a tragic loss at such a young age,” added Button’s team mate Lewis Hamilton. “Dan was a racer I’d followed throughout my career, as I often followed in his footsteps as we climbed the motorsport ladder in the UK. As a British guy, who not only went over to the States but who twice won the Indy 500, he was an inspirational guy, and someone that every racing driver looked up to with respect and admiration.”
Force India’s Paul di Resta, whose cousin and now four-time IndyCar champion Dario Franchitti narrowly avoided the carnage in Sunday’s race, commented: “Very sad news that a great racer has died. Rest in peace Dan. Thoughts are with your family.”
Red Bull’s Mark Webber, another to have raced Wheldon, added: “Rest in Peace Dan. I remember our early days in the UK in ‘95/’96. Miss ya.”
And on arriving home from Korea, Williams’ Rubens Barrichello stated: “Just got out from the plane and got the terrible news about the death of our friend Dan Wheldon. Will always remember the great times we had at karting in Brazil my friend. Rest in peace.”
Wheldon is survived by his wife Susie and two young sons, Sebastian and Oliver.
From what I understand Wheldon and Button had quite the rivalry going back when they raced in the UK. Both of them had the british playboy personalities going for them.
The worst thing about watching the footage on youtube is that the cameras were onboard Wheldon's car like seconds before the crash...
