BlackBerry maker RIM offers users free apps after massive outage
Research In Motion Ltd. is offering BlackBerry users more than $100 worth of applications to make amends for last week's international service disruptions.
The Waterloo, Ont.-based company said Monday that a selection of apps will become available through its virtual shop, BlackBerry App World, starting Wednesday.
RIM said it would take about four weeks for its full selection to become available, which subscribers will have free access to until Dec. 31.
The apps being offered range from games, such as SIMS 3 and Bejeweled, to communications software, such as Vingo Plus, which has voice-to-text features.
The gesture comes as RIM tries to maintain the loyalty of customers affected by disruptions last week that affected email, instant messaging and web browsing for users around the world.
"We truly appreciate and value our relationship with our customers," RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis said in a statement. "We've worked hard to earn their trust over the past 12 years, and we're committed to providing the high standard of reliability they expect, today and in the future."
Corporate customers are also being offered one month of free technical support.
