Be Aware of the Sharks
 

Dear RS,

I was hesitant to put this video up on rs as it is a video my wife and I made for a no shark fin contest
to raise awareness for shark finning and the need to conserve Sharks.
I was scared about getting banned on here as I frequent this forum almost daily.

Thanks for doing this. I am strongly against shark finning and I'm glad to see that many places are beginning to ban them.
The biggest challenge is the fact that to MANY uneducated, unaware, and shallow people, shark fins are worth so much and this will always drive a demand and as we all know, money is always first. Same story for elephant tusks, or ivory.

Yup, same with whales, dolphins. With all these apex predators going into extinction, there will be some major things happen to our ocean. No one knows what it will be tho.

thread back in 2008?, I have decided not to serve shark fins in my future wedding.

It wasn't easy for us with the pressure of our traditional Chinese
parents, but we did it anyways :D!

this, along with people chopping monkey's heads live and eating their brains, and cooking donkey's alive.... fuck, chicken and red meat is good enough

people also deep fry fish alive in china and then serve it on the plate with the fish still gasping for air.

the fish is scaled, gutted and cooked alive.

It's a really controversial issue because Chinese people consider this a delicacy. The shark fin soup. I'm not saying this is nothing, but the problem is that there are a lot of factors that play into this. That's the main point. I don't see the result of sharks being banned for fishing for their fins at the end of the tunnel.

Agree. Actually more and more cities/countries are banning shark fins entire now. It may not be in the near future, but I think every small step will help.

But- but where will I get my fake shake fin soup if it is ban....... Don't really care for the real thing the fake ones from night market taste so good.

Not long ago whaling was both permitted and socially acceptable worldwide; now the struggling sham that is the Japanese fishing fleet is all that remains of the industry, itself on the verge of extinction.

Shark fining will end within our lifetimes. One of my greatest hopes is that it will come as a result of a change in public perception, and not the tragic alternative...

Denying that the Japanese fishing fleet is a commercial harvest is as ludicrous as denying the holocaust, but that is precisely what the Japanese government and supporters of the industry do. Only under the guise of research are they capable of continuing the harvest, circumventing international treaties that prohibit commercial whaling. I wonder how whale biologists worldwide manage without killer and factory ships... quite the quandary.

Do you know if they're using it as a food source? I've heard about the "research" masquerade, but if they're actually using them for food, is it all that bad?

The Japanese fishing fleet was heavily involved in commercial whaling prior to the enactment of the International Whaling Commission moratorium on the harvest of whales. When the body of a whale is taken aboard a factory ship a bit of basic information is taken, which allows Japan to call the harvest research, permitted under a provision of the moratorium. The meat is then processed and sold. It's not just environmentalist groups like Greenpeace, Sea Shepard and World Wildlife Fund who assert that it is not research, nations and respected scientists do as well. Even Japan has essentially admitted it's not research, they just don't feel like following the treaties that only they oppose. Is it bad to violate an international moratorium, yup, I'd say so.

This reminds me of the movie The Cove. Involving the Japanese killing whales at a common island cove

That was dolphins, and part of a traditional hunt by a single village, and was ridiculously stilted. What goes on in Taiji is completely different than shark fin or wholesale whaling.
