Latest Steve Jobs Mystery Revealed: How He Drove Without License Plates
The multitude of mysteries revealed following the death of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs' death now includes one that puzzled car enthusiasts for years: How did Jobs get away with driving without a license plate? It was common knowledge that Jobs would park his Mercedes SL55 AMG in a handicapped spot at Apple's Cupertino, Calif., headquarters, with nothing to identify his vehicle other than the tiny barcode that usually rests behind the rear license plate. According to Walter Isaacson's new biography, Jobs wanted to avoid having a plate for privacy reasons; and yet when having a license-less silver Mercedes became a kind of trademark, Jobs kept motoring without one "because I don't."

For years, rumors swirled that Jobs had either won a special dispensation from California authorities or was just daring police to stop him. While the why remains somewhat cloudy, an interview by ITWire with a former Apple security executive reveals the real reason: a little-known loophole in California vehicle laws that gives owners up to six months to get plates for their vehicles.

According to Jon Callas, now chief technical officer of Entrust, Jobs would arrange with his vehicle leasing company to switch out his silver Mercedes every six months with a new, identical model — just another of the complicated and expensive ways Jobs thought differently.

How Steve Jobs Got Away with Not Having a License Plate
Steve Jobs was characteristically coy when he told biographer Walter Isaacson why he felt no need to have a license plate on his Mercedes. Jobs brushed off the question as if he were invincible, but it turns out he was just exploiting a loophole in California's vehicle laws. Talking about Jobs and his signature Mercedes AMG sports coupe, Isaacson said on 60 Minutes last weekend:

I said, "Why don't you have a license plate?" He said, "Well, I don't want people following me." I said, "Well not having a license plate is probably more noticeable." He said, "Yah, you're probably right. You know why I don't have a license plate?" I said, "Why?" He said, "Because I don't have a license plate." I think he felt the normal rules just shouldn't apply to him.

The normal rules in fact did apply to Steve Jobs, but even though he could certainly afford to pay the tickets, it's likely that he never even got one. David Heath at IT Wire recently spoke to Jon Callas, a former Apple executive, about the case of the missing license plate, and Callas explained how Jobs got away with it:

Anyone with a brand new car had a maximum of six months to affix the issued number plate to the vehicle. So Jobs made an arrangement with the leasing company; he would always change cars during the sixth month of the lease, exchanging one silver Mercedes SL55 AMG for another identical one. At no time would he ever be in a car as old as six months; and thus there was no legal requirement to have the number plates fitted.

It's true. We looked it up. In California, you have six months from the time you register your vehicle to switch the dealer's temporary tag for a permanent plate. For whatever reason Because they're obsessive, Apple fans have also made a habit of taking pictures of Jobs's license plate and so we have a record in cell phone photos of the missing plates, though it appears that Jobs didn't bother to post the temporary tag, which is required by California state law, either.

Another observation, however, is the fact that Jobs parked in handicapped spots all the time. Did he have a handicapped sticker because of his illness? Maybe, but we can't see one. Does the lack of license plate keep him from getting parking tickets? No, because the meter maids can always check your VIN number through the windshield. Did he get lots of parking tickets? Probably not. Most of the photos we've seen of Jobs's parked, plateless car appear to be from the same parking lots, perhaps at Apple's headquarters. We're guessing their security guard let it slide. Is Steve Jobs awful for taking parking spaces from handicapped people? Meh, he's done worse.

But that's pretty boss.

Short version for the lazy: In California, when you get a new car, you have up to 6 months to not have a plate. Steve therefore gets a new SL55 AMG every 6 months in order to have no plates legally.

Ya I found this out last week when I was down in Cali and my buddy was explaining it to me. There is a shit ton of cars down there with out plates (using dealer branded plates with no numbers), its not uncommon at all.

There are 2 ways to plate your car when you buy it.

1) Go to DMV and get plates. Apparently DMV's are few and far between, busy as hell (3 to 4 hrs waiting around), and dirty. People despise going there unless needed. It isn't like going to our local ICBC authorized resellers.

2) Submit car purchase documents to DMV, print off tiny little paper plate and carry it around with you. The DMV will mail you your plates in 3 to 6 months, at which time you can affix them. Until then, carry the paper plate around with you, and keep the dealerships 'branded' plate on.

Pretty much explained in the first post, but it was VERY common on the I5 to see cars with no tags.

He was pretty crafty to exploit the license plate law, but he was pretty douchey for always parking in the handicap spots.

benwang 10-28-2011 10:52 AM

no wonder someone from other forum said steve is a dick

Bill Gates owns a Porsche 959 and had a hand in the Show & Display law so that it could be legally driven.

theres a documentary about his house...

he carrys around a card thats preprogram for the light systems, so when he walks into a certain room, the lights adjust itself. Voice command for his whole entertainment unit (TV, sound, computer), LCD screen for the peep hole... theres more... i should find that article.

StylinRed 10-28-2011 12:52 PM

he drove a last gen sl55 so he must have had the leasing company do paperwork to show he returned the car and leased it again (didnt actually buy a new sl every 6 months)

What I don't understand is....why not delicate a parking spot at Apple's Cupertino headquarter to Steve Job himself? Instead of painting it handicap...

Imagine him waking up late for work one day, and someone else parked "his" handicap spot.
Steve: :fuuuuu:
