Put a piece of cardboard on top. And don't buy car cover and park on the street, that's like asking for troubles.

I've used newspapers with no problem. How about an old bedsheet that you can just throw into the trunk and go?

with the bed sheet you could close the pass door on one end, wrap it around the windshield and close the driverside door on it so it wont blow away.
last year i used cardboard.

One of my neighbours was using a couple of old t-shirts last year. Seemed to work well for him.

Spray bottle of windshield fluid and squeegie to wipe the fluid off with. Much faster than a scraper. Posted via RS Mobile |

my dad bought those big windshield sunshades from daiso for $2. put it on the outside of your car, tie to the wing mirrors and boom it's nice and clean in the morning
worked well when it snowed too, all you gotta do is lift the thing and shake it
also won't soak up any water like carboard does.

My car has:
- heated mirrors (frost free in 30 secs)
- heated washer fluid (warm enough to melt frost in 60 secs)
Doesn't help with the side windows, yet usually rolling them down does the trick.

Isn't scraping the ice the simplest method? You have to walk up to your car anyways, get a long handled scraper and scrape it. You'll be done in 5 minutes.
Also, I think you could install a Block Heater...If you're worried about efficiency and wasting gas, then Block Heater is the way to go...
P.S. - Taylor, what do you drive?

this is like the only city in all of canada where you barely get frost on your windshield and you're bitching about idling your car for 5 minutes to defrost the windows? whine whine whine whine... It takes me 3 minutes to scrape off all the ice on 3 panel vans every morning, and in that time the vehicles can warm up to operation temperatures. If you're in a hardcore rush and the sun is coming up splash some de icer or hot water.

I moved from Ottawa, which gets a fuck load of snow, and these features certainly helped me avoid scraping a lot of times.
For how little frost we get here, if you can retrofit a washer heater system you could probably avoid scraping.

don't toss on hot water, hell I wouldn't even want heated washer fluid, too easy to crack the windshield.

I used to do the hot water on the windshield and door windows until one day it was so cold that the water never dried out and froze my door seals to the body. I didn't realize what happened and thought the latching mechanism was frozen and gave the door a big yank. Ripped almost all of the door weatherstripping in half and then had to replace it. |

Yeah, DO NOT use hot water to melt off the ice. Glass is brittle. A sudden temperature change like that will cause cracks. You're even advised against turning on your heater full blast first thing in the morning.
A simple Google search should provide all the answers you need. OR you could wake up 5 fucking minutes earlier and scrape the ice off. Welcome to Canada..
