| Factory Unlocked Iphone 4 Questions
I bought a factory unlocked iphone 4 from the apple store in richmond center at the beginning of may, paid almost 750 for it. Im with rogers but I will be travelling around so wanted to have one unlocked and no hassle in other countries.
I got to hk a few days ago and I tested out sims from 2 providers and both of them did not work on my phone. It had all the messages "invalid sim" "sim failure" "no service".
I talked to the senior advisor at apple asia tech support and he said that everything he sees on his computer regarding my phone says that it is locked to rogers (imei, serial number etc.). I show him the receipt and on it says that "no contract sim on it" so it should be unlocked.
He asks the apple tech team and he told me that there were "all iPhones sold by the Canada Apple Retail Stores before 30th July 2011 were locked to Canada Rogers, regardless of price or receipt information." He says i was misinformed and falsely advertised and filed a complaint against the store too.
He said the only way I can use my phoen is to unlock it through rogers. But rogers will only unlock if you fulfilled a 3 yr contract with them or if it was bought through them for $50. Which is total bs cuz I paid for a factory unlocked phone.
I obviously believe him to have the wrong information since Im sure bell and telus were also offered at the apple store. Now my question is
1) Does anyone have a clear date of when the factory unlocked iphone 4 was released in Canada?
I will be demanding a refund from the apple store when I return to Canada if this was the case that it was falsely advertised. Sorry for the long read, thanks!

It is correct that all phones were locked prior to the 30th of July, 2010. iPhone 4 Gets Unlocked in Canada, For a Price | PCWorld http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/st...-unlocked.html
If you bought it before the July 30th 2010, it would be impossible to have bought the unlocked version as it has not been released yet.
But rereading your post, you said it bought it in May? I'm assuming you mean May of 2011 in which case, there should've been an unlocked version out.

Yes i purchased in may 2011, the senior advisor and tech team At apple said there were no factory unlocked phones before July 30, 2011 sold in apple retail stores. So I think his information is most likely wrong but I double checked with him and he says it's correct.
Even the receipt says no contract sim but I don't understand why it won't work unless they gave me a locked phone. Any way to check for sure? Thanks

what firmware are you on? if you are still on 4.x, or even 5.x you can easily jailbreak and get the unlock right away

Thanks for the suggestion, but the reason I bought a factory unlocked phone is so I wouldn't have to jailbreak to use worldwide.

Yea I thought so too, but after trying it out at the store smartone (they provided me with one) then trying my friends PCCW sim from his own iphone it still cant read it.
So my guess is they must have given me a lock phoen to rogers when I bought an unlocked one. Cuz I know for sure they had factoryu unlocked iphone 4 before july 30, 2011 unlike how the senior advisor stated.
