BlackBerry Bold 9790

Supposedly will be released by many carriers (Rogers, Telus, even Wind and Mobilicity?) sometime in the next few weeks.

It's like the little brother of the 9900. The specs are similar, but the size is almost identical to the 9700, except significantly thinner.

It has the same CPU, and has touchscreen. The keypad is the same type, but of course a little bit smaller, but still fairly nice to type on, significantly better than the 9700 for sure.

It seems even faster than the 9900 though. There is like no lag with anything. Loads BBM group instantly and scrolls through the pictures as fast as you want it to.

I'm using a prototype, so not sure if the battery life will be the same on a retail unit, but it's been more than 18 hours since I charged it, and I have 60% battery left... not bad.

It doesn't look as nice as the 9900 (no metal trim), but overall not a bad alternative Bold.

ya ive heard good things about it too. its basically the new old bold. the 9700/9780 is/was a pretty good phone. definitely a good phone between the curve and 9900

^ The 9700 was a good phone. 9780 is a piece of shit. IMO the 9000/9900 format is the cadillac of blackberries. Has the best keypad of any smart phone to date, just a dream to type on.

Definitely try the keypad of the 9790 when you get a chance.

It's actually very similar to the 9900.

So it's been about 45 hours since charging, and there is still 15% battery left, so looks like it should definitely make it at least two full days. Actually, this is an old JM1 battery that I'm using, so maybe it might be even better with a new battery.

One thing that is unique on this model is that they finally put the USB charging port on the bottom of the phone. Now RIM can finally start selling docks...

Hmm I'm doubting the screen resolution though.. Because if it's true that it is 640x480, then its dpi should be higher since the screen is smaller than the 9900 which has a dpi of 286. GSMArena says the 9790 has a resolution of 480x360 (same as 9780) which makes more sense if it has a dpi of 245.

Well, there are so many pictures of it available online already, so I didn't even bother. Looks-wise, it's definitely not as eye-catching as the Bold 9900.

Anyways, pretty sure that article has the resolution wrong... I think it is 360x480.

^ Android couldn't perform your simple tasks?

Have you figure out the ROMs and all the customization stuff? That's the only fun part about Android, being able to change up the look of everything when you get bored. But for my needs my BlackBerry does everything quicker.

fyi

9790 doesn't have the same screen res and processor as 9900 it's actually a bit slower and screen res is lower, however for the size it's not bad

No I haven't messed around with any of that. Seems like way too much work. There was nothing really special that the droid did for me. Ya it has a bunch of fancy widgets etc etc but at the end of the day my main uses for a phone are basic. Even when I had iOS, I had a shit ton of apps but never used them. Also I couldn't text worth shit on that phone, that's the one thing that annoyed me the most.

Hmm, you're right... looks like the CPU is actually a Marvel Tavor MG1 1GHz, listed on GSMArena, not the 1.2 GHz QC 8655 processor in the 9900.

But, whatever the case, the 9790 seems plenty fast to me... can't say I've felt any lag at all since I've been using it.

New name is BBX. To my knowledge, there is nothing concrete right now. My guess would be mid Q2, but hopefully mid Q1!!
