| Someone explain unlimited web browsing to me (Bell)....
I have something called unlimited web browsing on my plan. It came with my old phone and they didn't take it off when I renewed with an android (Vibrant) about 6 months ago.
All my data usage is going towards UWB instead of my 500mb/mo data plan.
Is this normal or did Bell done goofed?
In other words am I getting unlimited data for $20/mo?
PS: I just noticed this last night because I never check my usage |

If it's anything like Telus, UWB cannot be transferred to an HSPA 3G plan so it's likely an error on their part. You can gamble and keep it the way it is and hopefully you won't be billed for overages. A lot of people over at HoFo tried to transfer this feature over and I don't remember coming across anyone who had any luck with them.

I think they were suppose to remove it when I renewed but didn't.

I have this too. Exactly the same feature as you: CORP Unlimited Mobile Browser.
PROTECT this with your life!
Remove your data plan. You don't need it and are paying extra for nothing.
UMB covers your data as long as you're using the APN pda.bell.ca.
If you use the inet.bell.ca or w/e it is which is the tethering APN then you will get charged.
I've been using UMB since 2008 on my HTC Touch, Samsung omnia, iphone 4, SGS, and now the SGS2. It's basically unlimited data. Remove your 500 MB data plan and protect your UMB with your life!

Hope they won't spot the mistake when I phone
edit: Doesn't Bell require you to have a actual smartphone data plan in order to use a smartphone? or will UMB be ok?
$20/mo for unlimited data/text/500 calling would be sweet

No, you only need the minimum $50 voice+data or w/e if you want to do a HUP or receive any subsidy for the phone. Because my plan is well under the $50 requirement and I want to keep UMB as it's pointless to get a data plan I've never done a HUP for a smartphone. I simply buy my phones full price.
Well worth it in the long run if your existing plan is cheap. I simply renew my contract when the time comes, get a dumbphone, and flip it for some easy cash.
If you call in to cancel data, I would definitely get them to make sure they don't take off the UMB. As for the data cancellation fee, I think that depends on your plan. You'd have to call in and ask.
Like I said, protect this feature with your life. You'll regret it if you give it up. UMB has been discontinued for years. Yours is CORP UMB so clearly it's part of the corporate plan you have so I don't think they can accidentally remove it? Either way just make sure they don't.
Any chance you have enbridge lol?
Edit: How do I know all this? Let's just say I've been a part of HowardForums for a while now where this feature/loophole whatever you wanna call it has been discussed before a few years back. It's just the way Bell's billing system works I guess. I remember a while back people with data plans even stated that their data usage showed up under "mobile browsing" while tethering data showed up under DATA.
Whether you connect through UMB or some data plan, it's the same and counts as "mobile browsing". Just make sure your APN is pda.bell.ca or I think pda2.bell.ca works too. Only thing with pda.bell.ca is that the data usage (at least for me and a lot of other people) is never accurate. This month I recorded 13 MB of data usage according to Bell Self Serve while my data tracker app recorded my usage as 1.6 GB.

Yeah I am on the enbridge account lol.
Unfortunately I did get a subsidized upgrade so I think there will be a penalty for canceling my data. Ill give them a call later today Posted via RS Mobile |

How much are you paying in total now?
Not sure if you want to risk and phone in. They might start noticing the error...

haha Enbridge nice.
$22.40 after taxes. Yeah I don't know how much your data ECF would be but I think it should be cheaper to cancel than to pay the extra cost for 3 years.
Btw, I've called in a few times in the past for various issues (nothing related to the data/UMB) and have never been questioned about UMB. It's really nothing to worry about.
Edit: It's not really an 'error' per se. It's just the way Bell's mobile data works. All you have to tell the rep is that you want to cancel data and keep the UMB. If the rep says you're gonna get charged without the data plan because you have a smart phone but are using UMB, he/she is misinformed.

i don't know why i didn't find out about this sooner, i'm still using my htc touch that doesn't require a sim card lol ;(

Nope you will only be able to get HSPA+ speeds unfortunately. You can get an LTE phone but you'll only get HSPA+ speeds unless you get an LTE data plan.
I'm still using my SGS2 and may never go on an LTE plan since a $20 plan with unlimited browsing/wifi tethering on smartphones is impossible to come by in this day.
If you're upgrading from your Touch the only real issue you have to worry about is losing the UMB because of some idiot rep messing something up when you renew your contract or add/remove features from your plan. Happened to my friend once but luckily they were able to reinstate it (might be because the corporate plan normally includes UMB).

I wouldn't risk phoning in as they're not only going to remove your data plan, but ask you why you are...for customer feedback. If you say " I don't need it", they're going to see your UWB and maybe follow up on that.
The downside is, if you ever have to phone in to change your plan which requires an overview of your plan....it's gone lol. That includes something from a hardware upgrade to a simple bill payment inquiry.

my 3yr with bell has been over for awhile, but i just haven't renewed it. i can just get a bell sim card, transfer my # over and just pop it into any phone right? and change the apn settings on the new phone i'm using to pda.bell.ca right?

Yep that's pretty much what I did when I switched from my HTC Touch. Buy a SIM, transfer your information over and pop it into a phone and you're good to go.
pda.bell.ca is good
pda2.bell.ca I hear works fine too
just stay away from inet.bell.ca
Enjoy unlimited data! Just make sure you don't tether, although wifi hotspot is okay (except on iphones).

I don't know the details but I just know you'll get charged unless you jailbreak and use a third-party app. I think it was mentioned on either hofo or that unlimited mobile browser thread on RFD. My bro has an iphone and uses UMB and he also told me he gets charged for hotspotting.

glad I came across this thread
I'm currently sitting on the Enbridge plan with UMB and 6GB of data.
So, in order to exploit this loophole, I would either need to call in to cancel my data and pay the data cancellation fee ($200) or wait until my contract is up and just re-up with a dumb phone. Correct?
Can I cancel the data portion in person (I have a friend that can help me do this)?
I have 2 years left on my contract, so in my case, so I guess it's best to cancel my 6Gb data plan now rather than wait for my contract to expire..
($30 x 24 months)
Cheers

Thats awesome. Does UMB still exist today? Lets say I were to sign up with Bell today, get to retentions and get my standard call/text with UMB is that even possible?
Still waiting to figure out if Wind will carry LTE or not to grab the Galaxy Note II...
