Caribbean in December recommendations?

A friend and I were hoping to take a trip to the Caribbean in december, right after our finals end, but theres so many islands and countries that its a little overwhelming and i dont know where to begin. Has anyone been or heard good reviews from friends? We're on a bit of a budget, so obviously the cayman islands are out.
