whining problem when i start up

Whenever I start up my car from a cold start, there is a loud whining noise comming from the steering pump location i believe. The first time it was low on fluid and I filled it up to the line, which made the sound go away but now, the whining noise is back, I heard it could be an o-ring I should replace in one of the screws i think.. Does anyone have any experience dealing with this? thanks

If there is a loud whining sound upon cold startups it may be the starter? But you say the noise is coming from the steering pump so I'm not sure.

If you want a diagnoses done pm me I can hook you up.

Are you leaking PS Fluid? If not its your PS Belt slipping.

v6 honda with ps? there's an o ring that lets in air through the inlet side that causes that whine, but it also makes the steering really stiff too.

if thats the case just change with the updated o ring.

if its not that, then its probably a loose belt.

there is a honda service bullitin for v6 power steering pumps that whine, the solution is to replace the pump, i recommend you do it at a dealership as they can be kinda finicky when you fill them after install, you could damage it again.

if its only whining on start up its probably just a dirty belt, possibly accidental oil spillage when you were refilling the pump. replace the belt, warm up the pump, check the level and turn the wheel stop to stop and have some one top up the pump until full while doing so

My issue was the air leaking through into the steering pump. I replaced the O-ring like the Honda bulletin lexluthor09 up there mentioned. Was also very low on steering fluid.

Check the quality of the the fluid. If its gray/blackish. It may be your rack ground out on the control valve seal. Its called "morning sickness". It will whine and lack assist in cold starts and eventually get better as the system warms up.

Whine vs. squeal. Whine is p/s system and squeal is belt.

Just my .02.

Good luck.

Could also be the idler pulley bearing causing the noise, sounds similar to the supercharger whine

if you were low on fluid to begin with, sounds like you may have a leak somewhere. check if the boots on both ends of steering rack are soaked with oil.
