Droid vs iOS app Support

So, for those of you that made a switch from iOS to droid (or the other way around), which apps did you miss the most from your previous device that were unavailable with the new one?

Please state your old and new devices as well please!

I'm debating on whether or not to upgrade to a different iProduct, or to swap to the droid market for my next phone.

For me (tablet), I had:

- ASUS Transformer (x 5 days) and
- Galaxy Tab 10.1 (x5 days)

Sold both of them and never bought another one mainly because it didn't have video skype VIDEO support (whereas iOS does, along with FaceTime).

... have yet to make the iPad purchase

Also, I couldn't do any online banking with my mobile banking/brokerage with android tablet, however iPads are supported!!

There are no ios apps i wish I had on android. Used to be games, but gaming on phones is not my thing, I have discovered.

Going the other way, there are plenty. The ios keyboard is HORRIBLE and you can't change it. Same thing for the browser (although you can get safari mods on the app store, they suck). I'm sure there are others, but I don't use my iPad for much other than videos now.

Agreed, when I bought my ipad I was going through the app store trying to find apps that were cool/useful enough to download. I didnt wanna flood my ipad with useless crap. After all of my searching I found the only thing I actually kept were my video players and downloaders. Safari works just fine for my usual browsing.

Along with skinny there arent any apps I have on my ipad that I need to have on my SGS2, but thats also because my SGS2 doesnt have any video restrictions that apple does :p

Also, depending on who you bank with, there should be a mobile app for android phones, I'm surprised you werent able to do this on a droid tablet

If you want to have FaceTime and iMessage just keep an iPod around. I just did it and it's one of the best moves ive made. I personally am not even a fan of tablets. Depending on the size, I find them just awkward to hold and typing on them just doesn't feel right.

I know TD has an android app. I use it on my SGS np but have yet to try it on my converted TP.

Right now, only thing I do on my TP is play mahjong and watch youtube before bed.

My HTC Desire HD must be on glue then, because Skype video works fine... even did video chat to my wife's iPhone. Oh yeah... and without needing WiFi (although it is BETTER with WiFi). Let's see your Facetime do that.

Really curious what bank doesn't have an App for both iOS and Android.

^My credit union doesn't have apps for either. Which is fine, they have a pretty good mobile website.

SiRV 12-05-2011 05:34 PM

I'm with CIBC. They have android phone support, but not tablet support.
I'm actually curious though, because on some other threads on iOS vs droid, people say there is a lack of support for droids currently in terms of apps.. what apps are people usually referring to??

dangonay 12-06-2011 06:50 PM

^ Most "common" Apps should be available on both. Some developers with limited funds may write for one platform first and then port if its successful.

Apps that rely on a specific feature in the hardware or the OS itself are the ones most commonly on a single platform. For example, anything to do with music (guitar pedal apps are a good example) are pretty much iOS exclusive because of the support for low latency audio.

The you get the fanboys who make business decisions based on their love/hate for either platform and choose only one.

goodreader for the ios. hands down THE best pdf reader on any mobile platform. I'm on tp cm7 android right now and while there are replacement its nowhere near as good as goodreader in terms of smoothness, useability and and function.

Page on the ios.

icloud. sure you can replace that function with dropbox or soemthing on android but its not as convenient as taking a video /photo on your iphone and see it show up on the ipad ready to be edit with imovie.

all that is irrelevant if u don't read pdf edit shit or edit video on a daily basis.

does Android have a FB app yet?

SkinnyPupp 12-07-2011 04:12 AM

I'd choose battery life over "iOS convenience" at this point.

Bank of Montreal. Their "app" for android, I found, is only a quick link to their mobile site.

i thought droid life was pretty bad too?

Do we actually really need another app layer added to our personal banking? My coast capital's mobile site works perfectly fast and laid out well that I couldn't care less if they had an app or not.

You haven't used iOS 5, have you? It makes the battery life on Android reign supreme.

Even AFTER the bugfix?

mb_ 12-07-2011 04:48 PM

^Experienced better battery life with iOS 5 than I did with Android.. but then again my battery was probably a lemon and it was running on Eclair 2.1 :okay:

Yes we do. In every possible way an App is going to be superior to a web site or web based app. Speed/performance, security, features, efficiency (especially data transfer) are all better with a dedicated App. The only drawback to an App is it requires more effort to develop.

The "bug-fix" didn't fix anything. Apple can't find the issue to the problem. Rumors suggest that it won't be fixed for awhile.
