Using different front and rear tires for a RWD car
 

I'm planning to get some new all season tires in the back as my rear tires are all worn. However, my front tires still have a lot of tread left. If I replace my barely used front tires it'll be such a waste. Is it ok to do that?

PS: all 4 will be all seasons tires

when you say that, are you talking differenze sizes or different brand ? i think as long as you use the same (so lets say all ..205/50/16) but different brand it shouldnt be a big deal, correct me if im wrong ?

Get the same brand and model, should be no problem. You can rid of them more easily later as a set if you want another brand.

as long the as rear set are matching, and the front set are matching... it will be completely fine.

The only time that ANY of your tires NEED to match each other is in an awd car.

While you can do it, it's not generally a good idea. If you have no choice (money and such) try to find something with the same wear rating and similar tread design.

Cars suspension was designed to work together, generally with the same tires. I would suggest saving for an extra few weeks (take the bus if you have to) and buy a set of four tires from TireRack or something. IMO, you're better off doing it right the first time. Because when you have money for two more tires, the other two you bought are going to be partially worn now, and you'll be in a cycle of replacing two tires at a time.

This is only true for size.

If your front two tires are in such brand new conditions,
put it up for sale on Craigslist...rs B&S..and try to sell it.

Sell it at a reduce rate if you have to. And use that money towards purchasing
your 3rd and 4th tire. I would rather spend that extra little money now, and
purchase tires for all 4 corners the same now, then to have to worry about it
down the road. It will also benefit your tire rotations in the near future.

You can do it, just make sure you run the same sidewall height and close tread pattern and wear rating as was mentioned before. Its not uncommon.

What's the importance about wear rating? Is it purely because you want the 4 tired to wear evenly? I guess I forgot to mention that the front are 225/40/18 and rear are 255/35/18, so there will be no tire rotation.

well Lamborghini Diablo, Murcielago, Aventador, etc...had AWD so...

Just throw some el cheapo's on the rear.

I always throw on a set of used tires for the rears, and buy decent one's for the front.

and the tires need to have nearly the exact same final diameter or you'll blow shit up. I'd maybe consider different widths front vs rear, but I'd never mess with different models/brands due to the different wear characteristics.

Unless you'll be putting your car in extreme grip situations, then it does not matter.
I know because I'm running 245/35/19 Dunlop fronts and completely different 265/30/19 Hankook rears.
I just bought the Hankooks and they'll probably wear out before the fronts do again.

As long as you have the same brand/size for front. And same brand/size for rear. You will be fine.

If your front tires are a different brand from your rear tires it shouldn't even matter much, the rears are bound to wear faster anyways if you have a RWD car.

Because Lancer EVO, WRX STi, etc...they all have same front/rear tires (I think??) but I could be completely wrong.

some awd systems r made to run with very little tolerance in tire diameters while others r made with a bit more tolerance to allow staggered tires diameters, its all down to how the manufacture designed the awd system
