I'm not in perfect shape, but I am definitely a lot better than I was when I thought fat was bad for you! Went from 210 lbs to about 183 by eating more fat. And my cholesterol has improved, I get more restful sleep, and I rarely fart anymore either

Just bought a 4kg box of frozen chicken breasts for $26.36 at safeway.
Damn cheapest I've seen so far. I rarely do my own shopping so yeah.

I recently bought a whole rotisserie chicken from Superstore for $6 ($1 off with those coupons) the other day and it was pretty good too.

I'm still trying to find the best deal on liquid egg whites.

Anyone know a good place? What I've been doing is buying those blue 500mL cartons from superstore for $1.98 each. I eat on average .75 - 1 carton a day these days.

Anyone know of a better deal? I checked out costco the other day (tho I don't have a membership) and couldn't find any liquid egg whites.

Saturated fats raise total blood cholesterol as well as significantly raise LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol). They are mainly found in animal fats and dairy, tho I wouldn't give up good meat to avoid them. I would, however, try really hard to buy products without palm oil in them.

As you said, trans fats are basically created in the laboratory durring the process of hydrogenation and should be strongly avoided at all costs

heres a quote from a recent study by the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition
"When replacing saturated fat with either n-6 polyunsaturated fat or monounsaturated fat, total fat intakes decreased by 2.9% energy and 5.1% energy, respectively. Replacing saturated fat with n-6 polyunsaturated fat (trial I) lowered plasma total cholesterol by 19% [from 4.87 (0.88) to 3.94 (0.92) mmol/l, mean (s.d.)], low density lipoprotein cholesterol by 22% [from 2.87 (0.75) to 2.24 (0.67) mmol/l], and high density lipoprotein cholesterol by 14% [from 1.39 (0.36) to 1.19 (0.34) mmol/l], whereas replacing saturated fat with monounsaturated fat (trial II) decreased total cholesterol by 12%, low density lipoprotein cholesterol by 15%, and high density lipoprotein cholesterol by 4%, respectively. The change in the ratio of total to high density lipoprotein cholesterol was similar during trial I and trial II."
So anyway, you are correct in that unsaturated fats (the good kind) can lower LDL levels, without raising HDL livels. That is fine, but then you have to realize that saturated fat, while it does increase LDL levels, it also increases HDL. And it does so by a significant margin.

Furthermore, you need to realize that there are different types of LDL - the small, compact kind that is difficult for our bodies to handle (found in disgusting chemically treated oils and "vegetable" oil), and the big 'fluffy' kind that is essentially harmless and easily transported in the blood. The kind that doesn't stick around any longer than it should. The kind of LDL that is in good saturated fat is the 'fluffy' kind, and is harmless.

So while saturated fat indeed increases your "total amount" of cholesterol, your actual profile will be significantly improved. And most importantly, your ratio of HDL to triglycerides (the most important aspect of blood profile of all) is improved by a huge margin.

Avoiding saturated fat is not only pointless and ignorant, it's unhealthy.

yeah but I keep reading conflicting reports on the whole cholesterol thing.

Either way I'm doing a timed carb diet and given the total cals I'm eating, I need to keep fat at 100g max so eating whole eggs all the time will put me over.
it's hard enough getting 250g of protein on non-training days without shakes argh and egg whites definitely help me these days

I think your tris play some role when you work your chest. So if they're still sore maybe thats why your bench suffered a bit.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong

Today is back and shoulders day

if youre thinking about your tris being your antagonist then you are right. other than that tri's are an extension movement and back is a flexion/pulling

Finally decided to increase my deadlifts a mere 20lbs bringing the total up to 245.
I think I did 225 x 8, 245 x 7, 245 x 7. Wow, did it ever tear my back apart.

So does everyone here use olive oil?
We have canola oil at home and I've been talking to my mom about switching over to olive oil but she's reluctant as she said it's more expensive (asian parents).

I guess I should just buy some anyway. So canola = bad and olive = good right?

depends on how you use it, if you only use it to in a heated pan, the heat will degrade olive oil to a level like canola oil. It's best to use it over salad or something
