I'm back on strong lifts because it worked for me while I was doing it, and it's simple. 3x a week, miss a day and you can still reschedule and shift stuff around to make it work.

Likewise. I started split routine, but after a few weeks have gone back to stronglifts. I've had good results with it. I like the consistancy of Tues/Thurs/Sat. I sometimes add cardio after workouts or on Sunday/Monday.

Forearm workouts! Check back a couple pages for a good one.

Berzerker 11-23-2011 09:21 AM

Hold on to heavy shit to increase your grip strength. It's like any other muscle if you don't actively work it it's not going to get stronger. That being said though, I've never worked my forearms out specifically but I have great grip strength. That comes from lifting heavy weights just in the normal course of working out. That and I worked labour jobs my whole life.

Berz out.

My diet has been pretty bad since halloween, kinda fell off the wagon and been eating a lot of sweets. Managed to get back on the right path the other day. Since then I've gained 5 pounds, but I also gained a lot more strength in lifting. Is that 5 pounds likely to be fat or muscle? Maybe combination of both?

My clothes seem to be fitting the same?

Straps and chalk are your friend. I used to struggle lifting 225lbs, started using straps and didn't really pay attention to my grip strength and just loaded on as much weight as I could. I can grip about 395 for 2 or 3 reps relatively easily now with no extra help from straps. Forearms are a lot juicier now too :smug:

Straps catch a lot of flack for being gay or for being for pussies, but they worked for me

dachinesedude 11-23-2011 10:06 AM

im on the third week of strongman 5x5, how the fuck do ppl do squats 3x a week? im taking squats out from day 2 altogether

bench 140

Why would you do the program and yet switch the program from something that is tested and true. The reason you do squats 3 times a week is because they work. If you can't do it lower the weight until you can do it. There is a reason you get tired as fuck doing them and that reason is because of all the muscles involved. Don't short the routine just cuz you can't squart a ton.

1. Are you having enough rest time? Maybe instead of 2 minute rest times, you can increase to maybe 3? 4? 5?
2. Pushing off with your heels? When I first started, I sort of cheated by just getting up any way possible, such as pushing it up with my arms as well. Use more of your hamstrings than your quads.
3.You need to eat more.

Don't ever skip a workout though, or you'll fuck up.. I remember missing a day of working out, and my squats went down tremendously. From doing 5x5 for 240, I now do 225, haha.

I've done stronglifts since June,
1RM - Bench 190, Squat 245, Deadlift 315 (horrible form), Overhead press 115, Rows 170

You should read the article from stronglifts. If you aren't going up anymore, why bother with 5x5? I forgot but, by then, you should be doing 3x5 or 5x3; I forgot which one was it.

I'm at 165 lbs and (5'10?) right now, I think. I gained about 15 lbs? Not sure how much fat I've gained though.

Anyways, I'm excited for my pump today. Few more hours!!
SQUAT, PRESS, DEADLIFT

Yep. 3 workouts per week. Be consistent. Lower the weight and work on your form and you will start moving up.

When you fail 3 times in a row to advance twice, you switch to 3x5. Then 1x5. I'm doing 3x5 now (3 sets of 5).

kevin7352 11-23-2011 11:06 AM

shit had an awesome workout today.
squat, bench, deads.
feeling really jittery right now though. can't really sit still to study LOL

Outreach 11-23-2011 11:26 AM

^^ So you did your back, your legs, and your chest in one workout? Back and legs alone should be done individually as one workout. But if that works for you great.

That obviously helps, but most people don't realize the muscles and tendons that control and provide strength for your hands and fingers are in your forearm. They run right back to your elbow. If you're not working them hard during your everyday life then they won't be very strong. Pretty important muscle group to work IMO. I get a lot of "why are you bothering" looks doing forearm curls in the gym, usually by guys that need straps :smug:

have you not heard of stronglift / starting strength programs?

Outreach 11-23-2011 11:32 AM

Your forearms come along w/ everything else you do, i don't bother. I'll admit though that i wish my grip strength was a little bit better. Even though it is decent.

RRxtar 11-23-2011 11:33 AM

imo, forearm curls arent going to help grip strength that much. grip strength comes from your fingers. right down to that last tip of your finger. forearm curls are more of a wrist movement.

youre better off using one of these

http://m2.sourcingmap.com/smapimg/en...ent-60503n.jpg

and not just squeezing it, but holding it. and not squeezing with your hands trying to make a fist, but like you're pulling in your fingers to your thumb.

i used to have one of those on the coffee table and id just play around with it while watching tv subconciously

i get my grip strength by wheeling wheelbarrows, handling tools, and fighting rocks all day. i lol when i can pinch grip a 3" thick 35lb allan block from in my truck box over the side one handed. while my employee has to get in the box and pick them up 2 handed. :fuckyea:

good thing i posted, needed the feedback

yea squats suck atm, need to work on that, still finding the perfect stance and form to push up

in other news, saw this honger guy repping it out on the leg press with 3 plates, i guess he felt like he got dem stallion legs so he went and put 3 plates for squats, lets just say he didnt even attempt to do a rep

Berzerker 11-23-2011 12:20 PM

haha Someone posted that exact same story a couple pages back but the guy actually attempted the rep and crushed himself!

Berz out.

kevin7352 11-23-2011 12:20 PM
