| Late text/voicemail notification
I don't use my cell phone much, so I've got a crappy Sony Ericsson Cedar on Fido Pay-as-you-go. Anyways, lately I've been receiving text messages/voicemail notification late. For example, a friend texted me in the morning and I didn't get the text until 8pm. Also, I had my phone off one day (sunday), and when I turned my phone on, it didn't give me a voicemail notification until the day after (Tuesday), even though the voicemail was left on Sunday. My question is, is this a problem with the network, or my actual phone? My friends are on the same network and haven't experience any problems at all.

My friend had a similar problem on an old SE, also on Fido. I suspect it was the phone; the problem went away when she got an iPhone.

Sounds like it's the phone. Had the same issue when I was with Fido and I had an SE Xperia X1. Went away on its own though. Weird.

Very likely the phone. It's your phone's job to communicate to the network. When you turn your phone on or off, it will tell the network you're signing off or signing back in. Having said that...
The network will constantly page your phone to send messages to it including, but not limited to SMS and voicemail notifications.
With the way technology has improved, phones actually do 80 - 90% of the work. The network does maybe 10 - 20% depending on radio conditions.

Thanks for the answer guys. Looks like I need to look for a new phone. Any suggestions for a budget phone <$200 for Fido network? I think Newegg has the old Sony Experia X8 for $159 right now

Give Fido a call, and maybe they can "reset" it.
Then see if the service improve / if you're still getting delay text messages.
