Anyone here been to Phuket? Any recommendations for a less expensive place to stay that's not dumpy? Thanks for any suggestions and tips.

Like Stylin said, there's not much to Phuket other than beaches and a nasty strip of tourist trap. It's not my preference when visiting Thailand, but the beaches are really nice.
I stayed at the Royal Meridien Yacht Club which was a Sheraton back then (which is why I stayed there, we got a huge discount from a family member). It's not a Sheraton anymore, but I would still highly recommend it. Now it's just called The Royal Phuket Yacht Club, Hotel Phuket Thailand |

Yep I know i'm just going for the beach. But with any tourist trap, usually you end up with two choices: high end hotel/resort or dump. Wondering if anyone has successfully found the middle ground...

I've been to Thailand a few times going back again in July. To be honest your not going to find any good deals on decent places. Like you say its mostly high end or low end places. Especially because your going to a tourist location your options are limited.
If you were to go and enjoy the other parts of Thailand then it would be easier to find nice places and discounts.
Also another good thing to look for is if there are any new hotels. Typically new hotels are very competitive and give great discounts. IE 2 rooms for the price of 1. But if they have a good traffic flow then they wont have as many discounts.

But after taking another look, $200/night for that place seems reasonable. However I was honestly probably hoping for something closer to the $100/night range.

Hmm just taking a look at Expedia, there actually seem to be some good deals floating around at the moment. Plenty of options at the $125 level...

When I went last year I stayed in this place: http://www.deevanapatong.com/
it was a 5 min walk to the beach and 10 min walk to majority of the bars...aka lady boy area
The place was ok
I think we paid at $250 or so for 5 nights (on Expedia)
we got free airport pick up/drop off and like breakfest + drinks and some other stuff...a package to ride elephants if I remember straight
Overall not a bad deal but I am sure there is better to be found...
To comment on the type of people that stayed here though was dating couples or people on their honeymoon...average age was late 20's to mid 30's with Australians/Euro's making up the mix....when I was there though we made friends this this Syrian couple who were on their honeymoon and that made the trip pretty great to chill with them

Does anyone have any good recommendations for a hotel in Phuket? I am looking at staying at a place for max $100 per night. Or any websites to look for them will be great. Thanks!

It is located right at centre of patong beach..most of the action happens on patong beach.
Patong beach is far ( approx. 40 km) from Phuket international airport. you might wanna ask for free cab pick up from airport |

Oh Phuket. So many creepy perverted old white men, and lots of tranny looking women. Ping pong show was fun though.

Phuket is a big island, there are many beaches that don't have the sleaze appeal of Patong.. Spent a bit of time in Surin beach in the offseason (Manathai Resort), it was nice. I recommend doing a bit of research and finding a beach/resort that suits you.
