| Looking for an Interior Designer - Any recommendations?
Hey guys,
My parents are looking for an interior designer for their home.
They have just recently converted three rooms into one huge room (a small living room, a small MJ room, and a bedroom) for entertaining purposes.
It's still in a mess and they haven't done any renovations yet, so the whole place is still gutted.
My mom isn't really sure what she wants out of the room so she thought a good interior designer could help her out.
If you or anyone you know who is into interior design and has a good portfolio can you please pm me.
Thanks.
(sorry if this is the wrong forum, please move if necessary)

What kind of look are your parents going for? Traditional? Contemporary? Budget?

so something that will fit that. there's lots of tree's around and water so it has a cabin/cottage feel to it.
budget is probably around $20k give or take.

All I've ever met in my travels were horrible.
One-this woman came to pick out the colors for the apartment. She picks beautiful colors from the Benjamin Moore line up. Everything is in a grey tone, and works across all the rooms.
I go to the paint store and get it mixed, and the lady is like, "you are doing the same apartment again?"
I ask, "wtf?"
and she says that she had just mixed these colors a few weeks ago. They were all on file.
So I start to laugh, and I *think* this woman just goes all over town pimping the same "barnboard" and grey to all her customers.
And they paid her something like $900. I'm like, fuck. I'm only getting paid $1600 to paint the thing.
Two-another client hires an interior designer. I'm sitting there listening to them and she hasn't suggested a damn thing. The client says, "I want to get rid of this and this and do this blah blah blah."
I'm the one thats saying, You can't there's plumbing, and you can't there's electrical here. So this interior designer was getting paid to do what? I'm not really sure.
I will say though, this designer was at least hot, but between my client that didn't know how stuff worked, the designer wasn't much better.

Do you know if your parents want custom made furniture and drapes? Because if they're looking to furnish the space with mainly off-the-shelf items you're probably better off with an interior decorator. Otherwise, expect to pay for it: a custom made 3-seat sofa with a medium/high end designer fabric label can go into the 5-figure range.
Here are a few namedrops on well known designers in Vancouver that might match your parent's style more and you would be working with them directly.
Lin Heppner
Audrey Topliss
Seoris Harrison
Tina Wei
Cathy Howden
Also you are more likely to work with an associate with big firms like Kelly Deck and Juli Hodgson, if that could be an issue.
Ultimately, it depends on the budget and if you want custom made pieces. Designers all upcharge differently so any budget can get eaten up with their fees: they can charge by the hour, they can charge a designer fee, they'll put a markup on the materials (ie: fabric) you use, etc.

Just post some pics of the place and us RSers will help them design the place...for free!
In all seriousness, personally I don't think a designer is worth it. When I watch HGTV programs I find some of the work the so called "designers" come up with is or sometimes they are really over the top. I was at my friends house whose place was just renovated, they used a designer and honestly I didn't really notice anything special.

Thanks guys, I appreciate all the insight.
I contacted kelly deck and angela a week ago and they haven't gotten back to me... which is kind of disappointing.
I'll contact the other people you mentioned.
I'm not quite sure of the furniture. I doubt it'll be custom. That seems way to expensive imo.
It's just a really big space and she doesn't want a basic box standard shape thing. my mom has a pretty good eye for most things but she wants to try something different especially since she's spending so much money to renovate. she wants it really nice.
anyway, here are some photo's. they are kind of crude and not the best angles. I couldn't really take good pics with my shitty bold 9700 camera.
The only thing we're going to do for sure is take out the windows and make sliding doors so we can fully open up the room to the deck. everything else is still open to options.
Oh and the picture that has the indent into the wall with a window and a blue board below it was originally a room with a bed in that indent and bunk beds to the left of it. I think now she wanted to keep that indent a room and block it off but just keep the bed in that indent? just so there would still be some more space for people to sleep when they stay over.. but, not quite sure yet.

sorry to bump an old thread but I'm looking for some advice/hookups too.
we got a 15 year old house that needs a extreme makeover. Looking for a modern theme with mostly natural wood/concrete/white tiles/aluminium etc...
Any recommendations?

Try Positive Space Staging + Design I've shot a lot of their work and can vouch for their designing abilities as I have been working with them for a few years now. Mention my name Rod and either Sandra or Cami will hook you up. you can see some more samples of their work on my website as well.
