What to do with an existing contract vs work-issued phone?

ok.. i've been on a rogers contract since Oct 2010. it's a 3yr.

Since then, i've switched jobs and they have finally issued me a
iphone 4S as a company phone which will be paid for internally
at my new job.

What should I do with my old phone/ph number? i dont want it but i'm aware that rogers has a huge cancellation fee. Should i minimize the plan to a $20
and switch it over to a old Krazr i have and sell off my old iphone4?

for the record: (my old plan)
$66 a month / taxes in

200daytime
2500txt messages
free after 6pm/evenings-weekends
6gig dataplan
caller ID/voicemail

If your work phone allows you to make personal calls and stuff, I would just cancel the plan. The cancellation fee outweighs much more then what you will have to pay for the remainder of the contract. If you want I suppose you can also sell the phone with the contract and see if there are any biters.

See if you can be reimbursed for using your own phone by your work.

Rogers max cancellation fee is 500. Cancel your current plan, sell the iphone 4 you were using on it, pay the remainder. Shouldn't be more than like 150-200 out of your pocket.

thanks all.. i was thinking more along the lines of downgrading everything on the plan to a simple $20 plan just so i can retain my 604 number. i'll sell off the iphone and slap my sim card into a unused krazr and keep as a backup phone.

Transfer your personal phone number to your corporate account.

OR expense your personal cel.

FerrariEnzo 12-28-2011 12:54 PM

so the company issued you a phone and a plan or just a phone?

If its just the phone, then use that with your current plan.. If you got phone and plan..

cancel your personal plan and sell off your phone, then just eat up the remaining balance if you cant sell it for the fee..

OR

Find someone who wants to take over your contract and offer the phone for free and an incentive.. just work out who will pay the transfer fee if there is any

**the company issued me a phone AND plan (includes data/voice). crappy thing is it is a 778 number so i arranged to forward all calls/txt messages from my 604 number.

i dont think i can transfer my personal number because it is still under a contract. but i'll check.

Acura604 12-28-2011 01:12 PM

i called rogers.. my options are:

1. complete cancellation: $500 fee

2. delete data plan and remove added services: $100 fee (monthly plan $17.50)

3. $17.50 plus $10.00 (data hold fee)

4. transfer the plan to someone else to takeover.

I'm thinking #2.

FerrariEnzo 12-28-2011 05:11 PM

why dont you find someone someone to take over your plan... then just offer $100-$200 for them to take over.. then sell your phone for $400? (not sure what these go for now)
If you go #2, you still end up paying around $400 or so coz you still have just under 2 years left...

Sky_High 12-28-2011 06:22 PM

Just do #2, as #4 is out of the option...since you want to keep your 604 number

Acura604 03-22-2012 06:27 AM

FYI... as an update to this thread.

I ended up with option 2 - reducing the regular line to the lowest plan possible on rogers and then enabled call forwarding on the phone to the work line.

BUT... if you do not have 'call forwarding' active on your account, forwarded calls are billed at 0.20cents PER minute. I called Rogers to inquire about a 'call forwarding' addon and she said this plan 'qualifies' for 2500 free forwarded minutes to offset the govt regulatory fee..they dont let people know this UNLESS requested. WTF?!!! anyways, this is a $3 fee that gets credited as well so it costs nothing...if you forward calls and are paying for it.. CALL ROGERS!
