| Honda Transmission Problems
Hi everybody,
So my parents have a 1999 Honda Odyssey around 150K kms. ITs a 3.5 Vtec V6.
The transmission is acting up real strange lately. For example on normal acceleration, right past 2300RPM's ish the tranny will start to slip. But, on occasion the tranny will run like normal for a bit then turn wild again.
I've heard that 1999-2001's V6 transmissions were total garbage from Honda. Should we look to get it replaced? Or would a rebuild be a better option? We've talked with AAlltech Transmissions in Richmond and they've said that at a dealership it may cost over 4G's to replace. Obviously we dont wanna spend too much on it.
Looking to get some advice here. Thanks in advance!

The tranny is toast. I remember when my old 01' odyssey tranny went bad, it started slipping around the same area as yours. I was lucky enough to have Honda warranty the tranny even though it was out of warranty for a couple of years at that point. Your best bet would be to speak with a shop that specializes in Honda automatics. The old trans blew up so often that it shouldn't be hard to find a shop that can do the rebuild. Change the fluid should be around 9 litres for a full change and the filter and the 2nd and 3rd gear pressure switches.

from what ive heard the tranny's around that time period in the 99 accord 4 cyl's and the v6's were the exact same transmissions. and i know for a fact that a lot of ppl had major issues if they had a v6 accord around those years so i would assume any v6 around that era will have tranny problems. as for the 4 cylinder accords ive seen them go 400 thousand k's on the stock original tranny.

The tranny on these vans are garbage! Same as the engine! If it over heats just a little bit the head bolts will pull out of the block and you'll loose coolant. Seen many and fixed many.

Well, we dropped the car off at AAlltech Transmissions last night, probably gonna get a call from them today or tomorrow.
While driving there the car wasnt slipping, it woudnt switch gears. Example would be accelerating from a red light, it would get to about 2800RPM's or so then try to shift to second, but second wont engage for 10 seconds or so. Then when it does engage, couple thousand RPM's after it would try to shift again, same process happens.
Thanks for all your replies! Hope it doesnt cost us an arm and a leg to fix.

I have a mechanic in my back pocket that I can connect you with who's done quite a few Honda rebuilds. PM me if you'd like more info.
Hope all goes well with AAltech.

I had a 99 Accord with the same issues it costed me about 1500 to rebuild it, appetizingly the drum cracks really easy and when they rebuild it they normally would put in a more durable and stronger drum. Good luck

rebuiliding it or replacing with a used tranny is going to cost the same.
Once you repair it. Sell it because their ticking time bombs.

It depends what your plans with the car is if you plan to keep it then fix it but just be prepared that problem will come back. Another option is just sell it and get something else, problem solved Posted via RS Mobile |

for op:
you can still sell the van and get a new one, chances is you spend less money on the new one unless the current van means a lot to you.

Those slipping symptoms are exactly what happened to me, jolting, slipping after shifting past second gear. The tranny is fine when its cool but when its heating up after driving for half an hour, it slips etc..Your 3rd gear is most likely burnt to a crisp like my accord's. Those odyssey's have bad 3rd gear like the rest of the automatic accords 2000-2003. I searched everywhere for a cheap place to rebuild my 04 v6. Almost everywhere quoted me over 2-3gs to rebuild, until..I happened to see this small shop near ICBC in surrey. My rebuild was 1800 after tax which is the cheapest place I could find out of all the places around the lower mainland, i've called and finished within 2 days. The man has been doing it for years and he always gave me a call to keep me up to date with whatever he is doing if you ask.
He showed me the gears once he finished, they are made in mexico, and most of the gears have been worn down pretty bad even though I drive smoothly without hard acceleration over the years. He uses new gears made from a well known company in the U.S but I forgot the name. Almost a year now, the car is running very smooth, just what a new car would.
If you need me to give you the name of the place and address just PM me.

putting transmission issues aside, an oddyssey is much better in terms of quality and a drive. When it works, it's a great van!
