I would think that if the owners were legitimately unable to be reached and later tried to get the dog back, they would win in court.

Let's say, the family had an emergency-- everyone was gathered in the hospital and had little to no time to stick around for the dog. The dog could usually have shaggy hair, he got outside and got lost. (I say this because my old dog only went for grooming after he became a shaggy mess and he hated getting groomed.). Also, the dog may be referred to in different languages (my dog has a chinese name and an english name). Perhaps, some kid is looking after the house (and the dog) and is too much of an idiot to take responsibility and do a thorough search for him. We all know how dumb teens can be.

There could be many unfortunate circumstances. But the pup is young, probably not too attached to anyone at the moment and he's quite the lucky pup to have found a kind stranger. So I wouldn't think too much of 'what if's' unless there some legal repercussions.

So if someone is supposed to be taking care of the dog, why aren't they looking for it when it has gone missing? No calls looking for that type of dog. I assume Spoon put up posters.

There's always that situation where grandma/grandpa who doesn't speak english takes care of the dog while you're on vacations and the dog runs away. grandma/grandpa are too scared to call SPCA or they just don't know what to do.

All of your explanations are valid too. I'm super happy for the dog that he has someone to properly care for him. I'm just saying it would be shitty if I left my dog with grandpa and my dog wandered off and got adopted by someone else while I was on vacation.

I'm super happy for spoon, and it's probable that the dog is better off under his care anyways, but I can agree with JKam that it would really suck if the owners go searching for him today since they got back from vacation or something.
It's still no excuse to leave him uncared for, but it would really suck for them..

congrats spoon, 3 dogs now huh? Must be fun!

JKam 01-20-2012 09:53 AM

btw.. is there a limit to how many dogs you have in Richmond? I know in Surrey the bylaw says you can only have a maximum of two per household.

shenmecar 01-20-2012 12:53 PM

The neglect of his previous owner is absolutely ridiculous. Fuck, i bet its another one of those young honger couple who bough him as a puppy because he was sooo cute. Then, as he grew, the owner started to forget about him, hence the long fur............This routine makes my blood BOIL!!!!!

But I am truly happy he has the incredible luck to find a new owner like you.

I remember checking before (the last found doggy thread) and the limit in Richmond is 3 :)

Don't entrust the dog with the grandparent? Simple enough I would think.

If you know they don't speak English and wouldn't know how to go through the SPCA or methods to find back the dog, I wouldn't leave it to them.

I would trust a good friend that is capable of handling my pet. (And fit enough to chase after them :fullofwin:)

spoon.ek9 01-20-2012 01:09 PM

^ Totally agree. Leaving the dog with someone incapable of caring for the dog properly is also a form of ignorance and neglect. I know I would never do such a thing.

Keep in mind, the dog has gone through Thursday (when I found him) all the way until yesterday with zero contact by anyone including owner. He was picked up by the shelter on Monday which was when they first contacted the owner. Monday passes, Tuesday passes, Wednesday passes and I eventually adopted him on Thursday afternoon.

There's also no guarantee that Thursday was the first day he was out and about by himself on the streets!

I'm just playing devil's advocate but I don't cut my dogs fur in the winter because he doesn't like being fucking cold... even with the stupid hoody my gf got him. lol

Like I mentioned before, that's what happened to me before. Dog lost by ESL grandma while family away. They came back after a week and a half and, while putting up their lost dog posters, saw my found dog posters. Stupid thing is, I still have a picture somewhere of their lost dog posters posted next to my found dog poster. lols.

+1 and what if the dog got sick? ate something it shouldn't have? what would the old ESL grandparent do then? just let the dog die? :(

His name is officially BB. I had initially been calling him this because he is the baby in the family and figured it would be temporary. He responds to this name already so I don't see too much of a reason to change it :)
