Okay OP I'm one of those kids that also happened to get a luxury car as their first car and let me tell you gas is going to rape your ass so fucking hard you'll wish you bought anything else.

As others have already pointed out who will be paying for maintenance, damages, insurance, etc?

Both cars your looking at use 91/94 which is around 1.45-50$ give or take per litre. VERSUS 1.27-1.30 for 87. Doesn't sound like a lot but trust me that 15 cents adds up. Like modding your car? you're going to pay a premium. Insurance? way way expensive. Get accident or a hit and run like me? Prepare to pay. Luckily I have a new car that is still covered by warranty so maintenance isn't too bad YET. You're buying a used car that is most likely going to be out of warranty already, unless you're buying something cpo, so hey guess what more things to pay for.

The coolness factor of owning a luxury/sport car is great at first, but once you start university/real life it's going to be a massive burden on you if you're unwilling to keep living off your family.

I've decided to completely stop any form of monetary support from my family (minus tuition) and if I got rid of my car today I'd have a a lot more money left over at the end of a month.

It's all gonna look the same in the end, after you crash it.

Otherwise, get something cheap. (civic/corolla)

For example, my IS300 takes $85 to fill and it lasts 400kms. Insurance (when I was a noob) was $3xxx for full coverage a year.

Good luck.

that actually doesnt sound too bad... when i had my N i had a 91 turbo talon...costed me 3300 bucks for insurance my first year and that was with a 14 year old car at the time...

bought my 02 wrx and that was 3200 with a 20 % discount... i almost tore up the transfer papers right there

You guys are so insightful! Thanks for the replies, but im not going to pay for insurance just yet though.
But I figured maintenance shouldn't be THAT bad to pay for, since the car is reliable.
I was thinking of getting a luxury sport sedan because of their fun to drive factor.
I don't really have A job just yet but I will start around the summer maybe at Bestbuy or something...
Yeah, I was looking at the TSX as well wondering if it was good on gas?
But I definitely want something that looks good, getting pussy is a plus lol, but yeah it should be fun to drive.
Believe me, I practice on a minivan and it ain't fun.
Btw hongy what do you drive?

Getting a reliable car just means that you won't be putting as much money down on repairs, you still have to keep up with regular maintenance: oil and fluid changes, tires, brakes, filters, and etc. it really adds up, more so if you're doing some hard driving, city driving, or if you're going to have the dealer maintain your car.

As for gas...to put it into perspective I'm getting around 8-9L/100km in my 8th gen civic, on regular (~1.25/L) right now. That's city btw. I've been keepin an eye on the mpg meter when driving my friend's IS350. Averaged 12L/100km. Pure highway, coming up from Seattle, on premium gas. It hurts lol.

You said this is for university, I'm assuming for one of the local ones? Just keep in mind that you'll want to have some cash to spare for food and activities, and for whoever said that cars will get you some action: uhhh...take a look at the school parking lots please. I'm at UBC and luxury cars are a Dime a dozen there. I'm seeing more 3 series than Corollas, and there's plenty of very expensive sports and supercars to look out for.

the tl is horrible for gas :lol
350km for 50L, last me a week or 10 days if im lucky..
honestly, even for the i4 engine, the tsx isnt that great for mileage either..
no luxury car is good on gas PERIOD.

Have you considered an S2000?

Without a doubt, one of the ultimate fun to drive cars, they have an interior comparable to the others cars you're considering, get decent gas mileage and the maintenance is minimal. It's a two seater, but you can't carry passengers for a couple years anyway and girls love convertibles.

XplicitLuder 01-14-2012 02:07 PM

EUPHORiA1911 01-14-2012 03:39 PM

^LOL I agree... Sad, I really wanted a luxury car... Originally the budget was like $30000 or so, but he dropped it haha. I understand the maintenance, its just the parts i need i can do it myself at my school's auto shop. Damn, I want something nice atleast... 08 Audi A4 2.0?

NLY 01-14-2012 03:42 PM

TSX's are not particularly good on gas, but the real cost comes from insurance, and that doesn't include maintenance and upkeep.

If I were you I would buy something used (Civic Si sedan?) and tell your dad to put the rest of the money in your bank account/investment.

No better feeling than an extra 10g in the bank.

You're 17 and your dad is anticipating spending $25000 for a car. Why not surprise your dad and buy something cheaper and save yourself and your dad money. It would also show a lot of maturity because you're thinking long-term instead of putting all your eggs in one basket at once.

EUPHORiA1911 01-14-2012 03:57 PM

^But hondas are so shitty and basic, i'm not used to it... Do they atleast have a good sound system?

dlo 01-14-2012 04:02 PM

the acuras have the best sound system IMO, they even won an award for it lol, i currently drive a tl and am loving it.. gas is just a problem and same as insurance.. a budget of 25k, u can get a 07-08 tl for 20grand including tax and spend the extra 5 on insurance and gas? :D

Energy 01-14-2012 04:04 PM

^^ Listen to yourself... you're not used to having a "shitty and basic" car? What exactly are you used to?

EUPHORiA1911 01-14-2012 04:04 PM

must be sick blasting all them trance tunes eh? ;) can't wait dude... that's what i was thinking too, but it seems TLs and TSXs are played out like where I live so many people have one. And how bad is the gas exactly?
it seems the tsx has similar fuel economy to the accord, but it probably takes premium.
Edit: @Energy, what do you mean? i mean i haven't really owned cars like the ones stated (Civic, etc.)...

RevYouUp 01-14-2012 04:13 PM

If you're so concerned about fuel efficient, a "shitty and basic" honda might be the car for you. A Civic SI is far from being basic and shitty, fun to drive, tons of room and decent sound system.

You're 17 and you're lucky to have a car period.

And before you say "you mad you drive a honda"

I drive an IS350.
