Do you guys know if fish stores allow trades? I'm getting bored of my stupid neons, they keep breeding.
Attachment 10648
crappy bb camera.

Black Neon Tetras (6)
Rasboras Scissor Tail (4)
Pearl Scale Gold Fish
Cory Cat

^ how big are they? if you want to donate them i'll take them off your hands. i lost a lot of my neons to an ick outbreak a while back and only have 4 left. i want a bigger school plus they'd be happier with that, but i can't just go into a fish store and buy them as my angels will eat all of them. ask me how i know :(

Whats a good way to get rid of algae ? So far i have covered the tank with black garbage bag so no light can get in, only been turning tank light on for 1hr when i feed them and have been using special filters to get rid of it, i have 3 algae eaters and have been doing 1/2 water changes every week but it still looks the same. The water itself seems green.. Any other ways i can get rid of it? Tanks been covered up for around a week now. Ive got a freshwater tank 30 gallon with basic tropical fish

sounds like an algae bloom. What you need to do is do a proper black out for three days.

Next is to find out what the cause is. Green water is usually caused by:
1. too much light/direct sunlight
2. high phosphates

Take your water in to the LFS and get the water tested for phosphates. If they tell it's high, you need to feed less and do more water changes. If they tell you it's fine, you need to reduce lighting. Out of direct sunlight and reduce artificial lighting to 8 hours or less. Do a proper black out to kill the algae.

Cover the entire tank and don't feed or turn on the light. Your fish will be fine, most fish and handle not eating for over a week so 3 days is nothing. Don't peek to see how it's going. Do a water change immediately after (the algae will die and increase nitrates)

To get a better idea of your tank, how many and what type of fish do you have in your 30g? What type of lighting and how long do you leave it on for?

Obsideon 03-14-2012 04:05 PM

Semi-getting back into the fish world. Hopefully I won't get MTS Syndrom again ... gonna just play with 1 tank cuz I don't have the time to care for 9 tanks like I did before ...

Getting into Axolotl's! They are so freakin' cute!

No special kinds of fish.. just 2 small suckerfish, one big one, alot of diff kinds of tetras, a few guppies and a 2 other fish cant remember what type right now

Ive had the tank for 3 months and it was always CRYSTAL clear just recently it started getting green. Must be because there is a window nearby.. Usually leave tank light on for 8hrs, not sure what kind it came with the tank and has a purple hint to it

Ill do what you suggested.. The other day i did a 50% water change and covered it up

Thanks!

Sorry to hear that. Just happens as the forum gets bigger.

You always have the option to ignore members. We've been trying to weed out the unruly members and mods.

You should give it a shot again.

LOL D,

One tank is hard to do. You'll eventually probably take it easy at 3 tanks.

Most i've ever run was like 5 tanks. 9 is insane. A whole room with 20+ tanks is a full time job. Problem with us MTS peeps is you always wanna try keeping everything.

Obsideon 03-20-2012 07:21 PM

^ LOL exactly ... it all started with a little Betta ... then I wanted to give my betta more room to swim... so from fishbowl to a 5g ... then I got into Piranha's. Naturally you can't keep them with ANYTHING without it getting devoured ... so I had to get another tank for a community tank ... and then I got into various crayfish ... then I had a feeder tank for my Piranha's ... and then I got into Puffer's that also couldn't be kept with anything else without being torn to shreds ... and then I had a snail and shrimp tank as food for my puffer ... and then it just snowballed from there lol ... it was getting tedious spending hours upon hours every week just maintaining everything so I went cold turkey and sold it all in one swoop last year! ... :fuuuuu: now I'm back with 1 tank for now ... well ... shit I'm currently cycling a 2nd tank already ... :ilied:
