SFU

Membership is included in the rec. fee in my tuition.

What I love about it? It's big and fairly new.

What sucks about it? Dumbbells only goes up to 110lbs. and it gets super busy during the rushes.

Guildford Rec Centre
Fleetwood Sports & Leisure Centre

pay $30.25 for monthly pass which you can use at any gym in surrey parks, for basketball, swimming, etc. as well

year passes are available for around ~$220

What I like about Guildford: not much to like about it, 2 floors, has an upstairs for cardio machines and a circle running track, dumbbells to 100, 1 squat rack, 1 bench press, 2 smith machines, around 10 benches, some of them adjustable, total 4 olympic bars (45lb), gets pretty crowded

Fleetwood: 1 big level, dumbbells to 110, some are missing tho like 50s and some others, 2 power racks, 1 smith machine, 4 or 5 bench presses -flat/incline/decline, around 12 benches some adjustable, total around 8 olympic bars (45lb) treadmills/cardio stuff, what I like is it has more olympic bars and power racks, dislike how crowded it gets.

Saanich Commonwealth Place (Victoria)

Student rate $296 + 12% HST = $331.52 = $27.63 per month Pass is good for 4 rec centres in Saanich.

Been going there 2 years now and is very convenient for me since I live next door. 530am-10pm M-F. Pool, hot tub, sauna, drop in badminton etc. included. Gym is on the 2nd floor with a view of the pool.

JD13 can attest to how old the equipment is though. Needs updating and can get very busy at peak times as there is no limit to how many passes they sell. Dumbells up to 110lbs, 2 squat racks, 2 bench press, 1 incline bench, 1 decline, 5 olympic bars, 1 smith, incline leg press etc. Cables go up to 130lbs so I am close to maxing them out.

Once my one year is up next Fall I am thinking of switching to Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence (PISE) http://www.piseworld.com/

This area where I live between Elk Lake, Commonwealth Pool, PISE is expected to produce 1/3 of the medals at the 2012 London Summer Olympics

Richmond Oval

$50 tax in

Pros:
- 6 power racks
- tons of cardio machines
- fitness centre is on the third floor balcony, open area so you dont feel like you're trapped in a room with sweaty people
- rubber plates and platforms on 5/6 racks for quieter deadlifting and power cleaning
- 6 full-size basketball courts
- full track with 100M straight on the side
- indoor soccer
- volleyball
- badminton
- ping pong tables (8 i think)
- ice skating

Con:
- not enough adjustable benches
- not enough EZ bars (only 2 i think)
- for the beasts, DB's only got up to 110lb

im prob missing sth, other oval members chime in

TF Gym in Mong Kok

About $35 a month

-Good location
-Clean facilities, they are constantly wiping down all equipment and mats
-All rubber plates and DBs which I hear is a good thing. Plenty of plates to go around
-Everything I need can be found - dip belt, different lat pull grips, swiss balls, etc
-Everything is in very good condition
-Not very busy when I go, everyone is friendly
-Plenty of space to relax, shower, etc. Balcony for tanning (though I have a rooftop now)

Cons

-Only one power rack. Tons of space wasted on useless machines - 2 of the 3 smith machines should be replaced by power racks. 4 of the 5 curl machines should be replaced (although to be honest, those are the most frequently used)
-If the training room has a class going, you can't go in there even if there would be room, so there is nowhere else to do my stretches or mobility warmups
-Had to pay 2 years cash to get a decent price. I can put it on 'hold' if need be, for a fee
-They don't let me leave my bag in a locker to go out even for a reasonably short time

Other than the goofy machines, I like that it is a very 'no frills' gym. Very hard to find in HK, most are overpriced 'trendy' gyms or under equipped roidmonkey gyms, or overcrowded 'low price high volume' gyms.

-Heavy bag area

-Lots of body builders train here, so good place for advice

Cons:
-Only two power racks

-You have to pay for towels
-The gym doesn't ever re-negotiate contracts
-They play shit music

Gold's in Richmond

$44 / month

Everything is always clean which is one thing I like about this place. The place is never busy when I go so there is never a wait for machines or weights. People at the gym are really friendly so the enviroment is really nice.

The only issue I have with golds is as mentioned above the contract agreements. Certain friends of mine have gotten better rates than me. When I try to talk to the manager to match on prices and so on so forth no negotiations was considered.

Hastings Community Center

For students it costs $137.25/1 year

I love that in the mornings there is barely anyone there so everything I want to use is free to use.

What I dislike are the days I can't make it in the morning, I'll go at night and its usually packed and filled with people young high school students who are standing around blocking everything.

It's not that bad of a gym.

Jesus, I'm getting ripped off ha.

Signed up for GoodLife Fitness a few years ago, and stuck with it as I travel/move a lot and they are everywhere (Especially Ontario).

$48 a month
Depending on the location
1-2 Squat racks
Multiple benches
And generally busy as hell.

Doesn't sound great, but I go during dead periods, and I get the place to myself. Plus every city I visit I can generally find a gym.
