I pay for netflix, and I would pay way more if they had the type of selection you find on MU/torrents.

I can agree with them about piracy, cause let's face it, MU had a TON of pirated stuff, but the way they're going about 'solving' the issue is going to get us nowhere.

The RS case in a nutshell:

Yes, we censor the MU URL. Why? Diggy.

He posted a link to a Top Gear video about a year and a half ago. He changed the colour of the font to match the background. This is something google flags and specifically checks into.

As much as the SOPA people claim that Google isn't doing fuck all to prevent piracy...that single link hit us hard. We had our previously "under review" status knocked down and we were removed from Google Adsense. We appealed and had it brought back, but wanted to make sure it didn't happen again. One day maybe, our server costs will be covered by the google ads and the monetization changes that Skinny makes. Until then, all the costs of RS are coming out of SG's pockets.

Not cool

Certainly, $$$$$$$$$$ holds a frakton of non-copyrighted data. Obviously, it's going to have gigs and gigs of legal and illegal stuff. Be realistic people. But as you guys are saying, there is a LOT of stuff on there that's protected by IP.

I see a lot of people saying they won't be able to find their Asian videos on there anymore. Know why? Because in some areas they're copyrighted. Sure, here we can download them and it's a legal grey area (they haven't been licensed here so technically it's not piracy...you can only pirate something that can be bought) but how can we be sure that only the people who don't normally have access to them is downloading them? What if I want to download an episode of Little Mosque on the Prairies and I'm living abroad? Or if I'm living in Canada?

Sure, MU or another site could set up an IP sniffer and make sure you're from the right region...but I bet pretty much all of us could find a way around it.

The real reason this is all happening? Because MU has emails going from staff to staff talking about the fact that IP protected stuff is getting shared and distributed. The Amurricans can prove that these guys KNEW they were pirating stuff. It's one thing to have a server and not know what's going on. To remove actual content when it's reported (like Isohunt does). But it's another to know exactly what's going on and essentially encourage it...while hosting your servers in the US.

Oh, and all this stuff Anonymous is doing is just helping burn through the anti-SOPA/anti-Corporate goodwill that appeared over the last little while.

Weird that no one gave a retort to it. I understand the fails because it's a negative outlook. But the piracy caused this SOPA act. And eventually, piracy will make sure it passes. If no one pirated shit, then this sopa nonsense wouldn't be on our doorstep. But it's way to easy to by pass the laws, so it is understandable to try and shut it down. Someday the internet will be regulated because of this rapid increase in piracy and illegal activity, it's only a matter of time now.

if it was truly about piracy they wouldnt make their allowances so broad; piracy is just the guise to get this passed, politics is at play here and the govt just wants a better hand at controlling their sheep the rights/freedoms of ppl are quickly disappearing in most countries of the West.

just like Grants law... protecting hero attendants from dying was just a guise so that the oil companies could ensure that gas & runs wouldn't occur anymore as they were expected to increase due to gas prices being unjustifiably raised
