Old plates?

Quick question.. and I do feel like an idiot for asking this..

..But what the hell do I do with my old license plates? Can I just throw them in the recycling bin? Or do I have to bring them somewhere. There's no active insurance or anything on them, everything's been cancelled. I've just had the plates sitting around for a while..

TIA

I believe, technically, ICBC still owns them, so you should give them back to any autoplan agent.

If you plan on insuring the car at a later date, you can still keep the plates and use it upon insurance renewal pending the registration is still tied to that plate.

If not, return them to an autoplan agent.

If you have the plates, they're still good. You can insure a car with them. Basically you got to this point because the insurance expired on your car and then for whatever reason you got new plates.

If you had cancelled your insurance earlier than the expiry, you would have had to turn them into the autoplan agent.

If you really want to get rid of them, I strongly suggest turning them into an autoplan agent for return to ICBC to be terminated. I do not suggest giving it to someone else because it is still linked to your name. You don't know what their intentions are with it.

Yeah, I cancelled my insurance at one point.. and when I signed up for a new plan I just got new plates.
I don't know why they didn't take the plates from me initially. Hm. Oh well. I'll just drop them off somewhere.

ok so i got new plates 2 years ago, i asked the insurance person if i could keep my olympic plates. she said yes, but has no insurance on it, and its not link to a car.

If i buy a new car, can I reuse the olympic plates?

I was told if the plates were not active for a while the plates can't be renewed.

If you did a plate substitution on the olympic plates while it still had insurance on it the agent was only suppose to return one of the olympic plates for you to keep as souvenir. If the insurance lapsed on the olympic plates then you can keep both plates for as long as you want.

You can use your old lapsed insurance plates on a different car that is under the same owner name if it is within 1 year of the lapsed date. Over one year the autoplan agent will need to contact ICBC to get an authorization to enter it into the system. ICBC may deny the old plates to be used if it is too old.

As I said, the 1918's are a matching pair...very rare find, especially both in mint condition. I have 1921, 1927, 1928 then most of the 30's, most of the 40's and up into the 50's when they switched to tags.

DAmn nice find. I had an old plate that my grandfather gave me years ago but when i moved from Cape Breton to northern Alberta it somehow managed to disappeared from the moving companies truck Now i want to start collecting again.

Now i will stop going off topic, My friend used his old plates as mixing trays for bondo as we prepped his car for paint

Don't think this will work. The fines will go to the last registered owner which would be him. He would be held liable b/c he did not turn in the plates after.

Are special plates worth anything? My sisters friend has plates that have the letters BMW and 3 low numbers after it. These are standard plates not custom.
