Getting vehicle registration

Ok so I am looking into buying a Nissan pickup for a really good price, but it has no papers. The guy who owns it was going to use it as parts for another Nissan he has but it's much too nice for that I think. He got it without the papers so he doesn't know anything about it's history. What is involved, if it's possible, in getting some new registration for it so I can actually drive the truck? I'd also like to ensure that it's not stolen or anything like that.

did he ever transfer it from the previous owner to himself? If he did, you can do a lost regi search through ICBC, think it costs like $20-30? Then you would just have to transfer it to your name. But you can't do that if it wasn't actually transfered to him originally.

Here, let me Google that for you...

What if I don't have the vehicle's registration document?

Ask the seller to provide you with the Vehicle Registration. If the seller has lost or misplaced the Vehicle Registration, ask him or her to go to an Autoplan Broker's office to have it replaced.

If you are unable to contact the seller or last known registered owner, you must request a vehicle records search. To request one, you must write a letter to:

Driver Testing and Vehicle Information / ICBC
154 - 151 West Esplanade
North Vancouver, BC V7M 3H9

State in the letter that you are requesting a search for the last registered owner. The letter must also include:
- proof of purchase, which can be a completed bill of sale, a Transfer/Tax Form (PDF), or a Notarized Statutory Declaration.
- a $7 cheque, payable to “ICBC.”
- your signature

I tried google but I guess my search terms weren't very good. There is no proof of purchase or bill of sale, anything like that. The guy who has it now is not the registered owner and we don't know who is. What is a Notarized Statutory Declaration?

A statutory declaration is basically a statement that says "I bought it from so and so for $xxxx. He does not have a registration. He bought the car in 20xx for $xxxx from xxxxxxxx." It is then notarized which means you basically pay somebody to verify who you are and they remind you that if you are lying, it will end poorly for you.

Ha ha awesome. Ok that's good information, I think my first step is to make sure it's not stolen. I found this website for that, so I am just waiting to get the VIN for it. Welcome Page | Page d'accueil
