Nokia 808 PureView ushers in a revolution in smartphone imaging
Nokia sets a new industry standard with the first in a range of high end experiences based on exclusive Nokia PureView imaging technologies.
Barcelona, Spain - Nokia today ushered in a new era in high-end smartphone imaging with the Nokia 808 PureView. This is the first smartphone to feature Nokia PureView imaging technologies, bringing together high resolution sensors, exclusive Carl Zeiss optics and Nokia developed algorithms, which will support new high-end imaging experiences for future Nokia products.
The Nokia 808 PureView features a large, high-resolution 41 megapixel sensor with high-performance Carl Zeiss optics and new pixel oversampling technology. At standard resolutions (2/3, 5 and 8 megapixels) this means the ability to zoom without loss of clarity and capture seven pixels of information, condensing into one pixel for the sharpest images imaginable. At high-resolution (38 megapixel maximum) it means the ability to capture an image, then zoom, reframe, crop and resize afterwards to expose previously unseen levels of details. With superior low-light performance and the ability to save in compact file sizes for sharing in email, MMS, and on social networks, the Nokia 808 PureView makes it possible for anyone to capture professional looking images in any conditions.
In addition to superior still imaging technology, the Nokia 808 PureView, also includes full HD 1080p video recording and playback with 4X lossless zoom and the world's first use of Nokia Rich Recording. Rich Recording enables audio recording at CD-like levels of quality, previously only possible with external microphones. The Nokia 808 PureView also features exclusive Dolby Headphone technology, transforming stereo content into a personal surround sound experience over any headphones and Dolby Digital Plus for 5.1 channel surround sound playback.
"Nokia PureView imaging technology sets a new industry standard by whatever measure you use," said Jo Harlow, executive vice president of Nokia Smart Devices. "People will inevitably focus on the 41 megapixel sensor, but the real quantum leap is how the pixels are used to deliver breath-taking image quality at any resolution and the freedom it provides to choose the story you want to tell."
So the device won't be announced until MWC but there's been lots of rumors and tidbits of information being leaked and teased
so i figured id make a thread for it now; i've already been mentioning it in the photography forum too so if you browse over there you'll simply see the same information repeated here until MWC next Monday
1. its going to be Symbian because its the OS best suited for Nokias camera coding requirements (Maemo and Windows Phone just isnt there yet)
As for what version of Symbian? its suggested it will be Nokia Carla; Nokia just released Nokia Belle which even GSMArena states rivals Android and is "almost revolutionary"
Nokia Carla is supposed to polish Belle even further
2. its saidd that the phone will have a Dual core processor + gpu (nokia hasnt used dual cores since the N95 days) and 512mb-1g ram and that the screen size will be 3.9" like the Nokia N9; the specs will allow the 808 to be upgraded to Nokia Donna whereas 1st gen Symbian^3 devices will be unable
as for the case/housing there are a few rumors and images to go from some show that it will look like the N9 and Lumia 800 but with a huge hole for the camera and others show that it'll look like some cheap nokia phone /shrug
3. its Hinted by insiders and rumored by bloggers that the camera will have around 40mpx
4. The sensor size will dwarf the N8s sensor (which is already the largest sensor ever found in a phone and the majority of Point & Shoot cameras) it's been hinted that the sensor will be at least 1" in size which is as large as Nikons 1 camera line (still smaller than Micro 4/3s cameras though)
5. the reason for the 40ish mpx camera is to use it as a Zoom function a "true zoom" so think Optical Zoom derived from High megapixels rather than using optics
Nokia has released a teaser today of Pure View the video looks like its simply image stills but people are suggesting that the close ups were drawn from the final image shown in the video
here are some supposed pictures of what the Nokia 808 looks like
This mock-up is based on some FCC filings for a yet unnamed Nokia device
it doesnt look like a design Nokia would use for a top of the line device
and
These are some housings leaked and the big hole suggests its for a Nokia device with a big camera and it would be in line with rumors that the 808 looks like the N9 not only in screen size but casing

i was more concerned about how the 40ish mpx (41 supposedly) would work even on a 1" sensor
the N8s sensor is 1/1.83" and i think its fantastic i dont have the skill to properly utilize its camera so hopefully as with the N8 the quality/usefullness will be intense
side note there are rumors that there will be a Windows Phone alternative but it seems more like wishful thinking based on what Elop has said and some credible insiders have noted
I'm sure the megapixels are an exaggeration done through some sort of interpolation. There's no way that nokia would have cutting edge sensor technology exceeding that of the photography world.

^^^^ Nokia didnt really start pushing its App Store until the 2nd half of the 2010 and it got up to 60k+ apps before Elop announced the death of Symbian... its still grown to well over 100,000 apps though but its somewhat fragmented -_-

guess you could call it a fake dual core.. dual cpu anyhow

Im not saying that the Nokia app store is bad, but Android and iOS gets 60k+ apps a day.. people just build useless crap any put it.... sometimes theres a good one in the bunch...
and now that Nokia is going to roll out Windows Phone OS, why get a Symbian OS phone? how is the support for it going to be?

ah i see what you're saying
but symbian is still Nokias bread and butter and they'll be supporting it with updates until at least2016/17 and not just minor maintenance updates but full fledged OS revisions
Carla supposedly by the middle or end of the year and Donna for 2013-14 (dont know what else is down the pipeline from there but theres still a few years after that based on Nokias own timeline)
and if WP fails, chances are still high for that, they'll have to update/maintain Symbian even longer than that
but at the rate people switch phones these days they wouldnt have anything to worry about and for those who hold onto their devices they've got 4years at the very least
Elop really fucked up with his announcement last year -_-
is anyone even using the N9??? it was quite hyped up and it seems things died down and everyone just stuck with iphones or galaxys. I wanted to pick one up at first but I picked up a S2X and didn't feel like dropping another 600 for the N9

bcrdukes and a couple others have an N9 the thing is Nokia wont officially release it in North America as they dont want it to interfere with the Lumias

While on the topic of Nokia, there was a study stating that Nokia phones are the highest drivers of Internet/data usage globally followed by iPhones and RIM.

yep but that makes sense considering they're still the largest mobile manufacturer in the world and the install base is in the hundreds & hundreds of millions
that's why they have that "next billion" campaign
oddly though even with news like this the App Store isn't booooming with apps and, a bit more relevant to the store, the developers make more money on the Nokia App Store (mainly because theres so many fart apps on other platforms) and there are over 13million downloads a day!
-_- Elops announcement really scared away the developers that were coming on board
