coffee table

after years of use our Ikea coffee table had seen better days. After no success in finding a new one we liked, the wife gave the go ahead to make a new one.
with a slight twist, under lit white plexi top with color changing leds. i think the final product came out pretty good.

built in drawer to control the leds, and IPod dock. (will be used for future home automation)

Oh man, that's awesome!

I drew up some rough sketches back in highschool for one of these but never got around to building it. Thanks for the motivation.

Very cool!

Just out of curiosity, what type of lights did you use? If I made one I would probably use GM Lighting LED strip lighting, but the only thing is the drivers are quite bulky.

I bought 2 of the "dioder" (I think that what it was called) kits from ikea. I opened up their controllers and spliced them together, to be controlled off of one. Fairly simple actually and small

very innovative!
are you running the power cable underside down the table, cutting a small hole in your rug to run back to an outlet? i don't see any wire for a power source unless that little black wire in picture #2 is it? if so, any plan to do anything with it to make it not a potential tripping hazaard/cleaner look?

jepho 03-19-2012 06:58 PM

Right now the cable runs down the inside of the leg, out the bottom and to the plug. Over the rug. Didnt want to cut a hole In the rug because I wanted to be able to move it easily to vacuum :-)
i have thought about having battery packs inside the legs with a jack to charge them, but couldn't be bothered and cause the carpet is black its not very visable, and no real hazard in my eyes.

We don't turn it on a lot but my wife and I usually host a few decent parties each year. (Halloween,Xmas etc.)
Plus when we watch movies etc. we keep all the lights off and just set the table to shine white light.
