baby monitors?

I dont know where else to put this question other than vot/vls but this seems more appropriate?

anyway my buddy is having a kid, they're throwing a baby shower and ive got no clue what to get them and im too lazy to go into babysrus to check the registry his wife made

so i asked my buddy if a baby monitor will do and he seemed pretty excited about it

anyways any of the parents on here able to recommend one? i was looking at the video monitors and reviews for all types seem to be pretty mixed

and i dont want to get something that will have his wife blaming me if something goes wrong ;)
^^^
hmm maybe a baby monitor was a bad choice for a gift :considered:

a security camera would probably work better than a purpose built baby monitor. Although it likely wouldnt make as good a gift.

as parents, my gf and I were thinking about getting one with a video cam when our daughter was born. the ONE complaint that i read and heard about which makes complete sense was that if you had a camera pointing at her, you would be a lot more stressed out. each time you are looking at the screen, and you don't hear anything, as a parent, you're gonna freak out thinking that the baby is not breathing/alive.

the best monitor, that we ended up getting, was the "angel care" monitor set that has a heartbeat pad. the pad lays underneath the crib mattress and detects the baby's heart beat. the monitor unit itself, has a thermometer as well as a movement detector. If the Temperature gets too high or too low in the room, alarm goes off. Same with the heartbeat detection. If the Heart stops beating, then the alarm goes off.

Price range is approx $109-$149

Don't you want something with sound and not just video?
