teh_poopsicle 04-13-2012 11:25 AM

gars 04-13-2012 11:27 AM

bloodmack 04-13-2012 11:29 AM

.. are you fucking serious? common sense man.

Neva 04-13-2012 11:30 AM

That'll definitely throw out the accuracy if you're exceeding the maximum which it can read. That's why there are torque wrenches and breaker bars.
Mastercraft Maximum Ratcheting Breaker Bar | Canadian Tire
it's 25$ go get it

never use a torque wrench as a breaker. I never use my torque wrenches for anything except torquing bolts.
Never taken bolts off with one, never will.
and always store the torque wrench with tension off the spring.

keitaro 04-13-2012 01:54 PM

I've seen torque wrenches blown up because of misuse. A torque wrench is a calibrated tool, and is not to be misused. Even dropping it could throw it out of calibration. It's best to use a torque wrench within it's middle ranges and not it lower or upper ranges as well.

jeffh 04-15-2012 09:44 PM

sometimes i wander if people on this site actually work on shit anymore

then i read threads like this, realize people are working on shit

and then i wish that they weren't

marksport 04-16-2012 04:31 PM

I use one of my torque wrenches as a breaker bar quite often, one of the main reasons I bought it. It is over 6 feet long assembled and feels about 70lbs. I just leave it at
2000 ft-lbs and hope I don't shear the spindle off again.

RRxtar 04-16-2012 04:37 PM

breaker bars are for noobs

this goes on sale like once every 2 months for $49. I paid $49 for mine and its held up great.

Got this too, gets the job done most of the time. Better if it was a bit smaller though.

ya it is a little heavy to one hand it in akward positions and its a bit big to get into tighter areas, but sure works like a hot damn most of the time. i havent found much it wont undo. even a rusted on/hammered to shit trailer hitch ball. even if you gotta let it do its thing for 20-30 seconds it always seems to break whatever is stuck free.

next on my list is a cordless one.

skyxx 04-16-2012 06:05 PM

^Cordless one, buy the 18V version only!

MindBomber 04-16-2012 06:10 PM

I have a Mastercraft electric impact, except it puts out 220ft/lbs I think. Best $30 I ever spent, it's small enough that you can reach most suspension bolts with it and an impact is far less likely to break a bolt than a bar. Even if I only ever used it for removing lug nuts it'd be a great purchase.

That said, it's no replacement for a breaker bar. 36" breaker bar with all my weight on it equates to 600ft/lbs worth of twisting force to break free a corroded bolt.

LuHua 04-16-2012 06:52 PM

Got a non-ratcheting 22" breaker bar from Canadian Tire for around $20, heavy as hell and a non-ratcheting head. You can find some pretty cheap ones and with something as simple as the one I got there's no way it's breaking haha. It was on sale though, go look around. Take every care you can to keep your torque wrench in good condition. It's a precision instrument.

RRxtar 04-16-2012 08:34 PM

the problem with breaker bars vs impact guns is you put so much force on one side of the bolt. its not a uniform circular force. even tho it has a socket contacting all sides of the bolt head, you are still putting up to 600lbs of force in a downward motion on the left side of the bolt.

a good example of that is the difference between using a J tire iron and an X tire iron. the X tire iron has a uniform movement with a circular force being applied to both sides and stays on the nut, and the J tire iron WANTS to slide off the nut.
