They have to be shipped out and what you get is the same garbage again. | While I have to agree that a lot of the suspension companies these days come from the same factory (BC, Fortune, T1R etc) You dont have many options locally to deal with rebuilding these and even the higher end ones (KW, Moton, AST, Ohlins etc).
The benefit of going with a Fortune Auto and say a FEAL coilover in North America is that they build them in the USA (Albeit same parts as their BC counterparts) but at least this way you can deal with people in the states and get it valved to whatever spring rates you ordered them with.
I just picked up a set of used Ohlins DFV's and upon installation noticed the rears are clunking quite a bit due to the inverted insert being dry. I got them cleaned out and regreased but its still there. I have no option but to send them out to Cali to get them fully rebuilt. The pricing isn't too bad but I can see why the option of going all out on a rebuildable coilover can be out of reach to some.

Touched up a a good sized rock that hit my roof about an inch above the windscreen hard enough to leave a chip about a millimetre across today on hwy 1, scared the living shit out of a buddy and me, in all honesty i thought it would dent it hit so hard. Imagine the sound of someone literally hitting your car with a fucking hammer...

Cleaned all the oil out of the RC's intercooler, I got a massive headache from the gas fumes. Also disassembled and cleaned the BOV, then put it all back together and fought the stupid intercooler back into the car.

They have to be shipped out and what you get is the same garbage again. | Some people own cars that do not have a large aftermarket, and sometimes BC/Kido/Megan are the only options when it comes to looking for coils.
Currently on the FX the companies listed above are the only choices for coils, and there are countless FX owners all over NA running them without any issues.
Sure a nice set of Ohlins or AST or other high end brand would be nice, but then again we all want to own a set of HRE's or COR wheels as well. But most people are running reps or cheap asia manufactured wheels as well...
Also there are a few shops that rebuild coils locally, at the end of the day they are coilovers, the pieces that go into them are not too darn specialized, they can be sourced and replaced. Its not rocket science, its a suspension system.
Pretty well everything you buy today comes from China/Asia, so what difference does it make if your coils come from there?

I think dukes is implying and we had looked into this in other threads.. there are very few places that rebuild coils locally. Especially ones that do proper calibrations, yes it is not rocket science but you add different amount of oil into each shocks in a set, you get some really bad results. If you pick off brands you won't get the rebuild kits easily. Perhaps you have a spare set of shocks when you RR your own shocks, but most people the car will be on a hoist for a good month? if need to send down to California to get it done. Quote:

when bc / megans are the only choice, i would rather go custom. its not that hard to buy ground control sleeves and buy your own inserts, for my car specifically ive bought KONI race series inserts and BILSTEIN with amazing, ridiculously amazing results. especially with konis having lifetime warranty, and the fact that i only need to adjust my height once, its not like im changing it every other month. there are always options when it comes to suspension set ups, but the new thing is to buy BC coilovers which the valving is crap and the springs are crap because they bind, the rest is just metal... get it revalved then order some swift springs in and call it a day

If you don't want to deal with the hassle of coils, then just do lowering springs and call it a day.
If you put on coils, you must do so knowing that they are a lot more work than any traditional suspension setup, they require tuning, they require maintenance, and they will (sooner than traditional spring and shocks) will require a rebuild.
It seems to be coils need to be rebuilt every 50-60k KM. Whereas even on the worse cars, a spring and shock setup will go 100k km.
The maintenance and tuning reason is the exact reason I chose to go with H&R springs, and OEM KYB shocks. I didnt want to deal with the hassle of coils.
Do I regret not having the option of lowering and raising my car withing a few hours, do I regret not having the adjustability? Yes to both. But I am still certainly happy with my current setup.

I put on 60k of mixed mileage (daily/track) on my KW V3s on my old car and it held up fine. No leaking, felt as good as new. Of course I don't have a shock dyno handy, but my butt dyno says it's fine.
I've since sold the car and the current owner has put on another 50k.. No leaking still.
?
Or are you referring to China built coilovers?

BRB. Let me write a letter to the race teams @ F1.
"Hey race team principle,
You can lay off your suspension engineers. Suspension setup, research, and development is not rocket science. You can save yourself hundreds of thousands.
Just get some BC Racing coilovers and you will achieve the same results as your custom-built Penske and Ohlins setup because Revscene members know better.
Regards,
bcrdukes"

well definitely they'll seize and require more maintenance
-shocks
-sleeves / collars
-pillow ball camber plates (mine constantly needs lube every 4 - 6 months and to be cleaned out
-new alignments , camber / caster angle
-roll centers
but its just something that goes hand in hand when upgrading to performance parts, definitely wouldn't recommend it for everyone because even a good brand like FEALs / STANCe or Kws will seize up after neglect and improper adjustment. (lets crank it to the max stiff compression because my cars hellaflush and i dont want to rub the fenders)
back to what i did to my car today... installed a filter! yay! ive always wanted a cold air intake but i guess this will have to do. feels like i lost 4 hp |
