A bunch of us went again to wrap it all up

picture dump

I drove a mostly stock mazda 3 twice and beat the best time i could get off my corolla, i dont even know how to feel about it

Dropped it off to get the turbos replaced and have some oil leaks fixed. I keep thanking myself for getting the extended warranty - so worth it on these cars. Will be driving a courtesy Civic for 4 days.

alternator belt adjuster bolt somehow got loose after timing belt change so essentially limped to ubc on battery only. fixed the car in the parking lot and borrowed tools. (many thanks to the civil engineering guys!)

car runs again like a champ now. :)

They're even going to replace the Turbo's with a Dinan tune on the car?

Energy 04-07-2014 10:47 AM

Yep the Dinan tune is as good as OEM. Might be different if I had like a JB4 or other aftermarket tune.

Sweet jesus! Replacement turbos?! I'd fucking hate to see that bill without the warranty. How many KMs?

white rocket 04-07-2014 10:55 AM

That's rough. Even more reason why I'd never own a newer euro without warranty.

The bill for the turbos and misc. oil leaks was roughly $7,500. Car has ~78,000kms on it.

The guys said that the turbos for this car were not designed properly so this isn't too surprising aka it was bound to happen. The replacement parts were redesigned and should fix the problem.

They actually just called me back and said that the driver's side control arm bushings are fatigued and need to be replaced too and its also covered under warranty. Now I'm definitely happy with the aftermarket warranty offered by First Canadian. No hassle getting stuff covered.

I'd say that statement could be limited to "newer or complicated" euros without warranty. My M3 is as simple and analog as anything from the same era.

bomiheko 04-07-2014 12:05 PM

omg, I'm scared my 335i's turbos will go too. Gonna start saving. It's about $2k just for turbos, then you add labour on top of that. yikes!

Energy 04-07-2014 12:34 PM

I never buy extended warranties for all my other stuff but if you plan on keeping your car for awhile I suggest you get one.

Who did you buy the extended Warranty from? Direct from First Canadian?

what is the approx cost?

I was thinking 2003 and newer. I wouldn't associate anything from the 90's with the problems euro's are facing today. Not that they are problem free but more that the problems that do occur could be fixed easier because of the analog nature of the vehicle itself.

When the OEM warranty was expiring my advisor at Brian Jessel helped me pick the aftermarket warranty. I'm not sure about the cost because the forms are in the glovebox of my car but I think it came to $2,500? Extend the warranty until 100,000kms or 4 years. Not sure about the exact details but it's something like that. There were many options and I picked the one I thought was good in my situation.

Decided to have my intake valves walnut blasted too while the engine is apart because it was looking really nasty.

^ If anyone wants to see the after pics its here and quite shocking: https://flic.kr/s/aHsjWBbR7Y

Dat carbon buildup.

Welcome to the world of direct injection. I've been running methanol injection and removed my EGR valve in hopes of slowing down carbon build up. I'll be looking to get my valves cleaned later this year.

Great68 04-10-2014 08:07 AM

Ugh. Seeing those valve pics reminds me that I'm inevitably need to do this too. :heckno:

Got my car back and it feels awesome. New turbos, front suspension bits, oil pan gasket, and clean intake ports. I'm very happy, the guys at Performance One did a good job.

Also installed the BMW Performance Shifter and it makes a huge difference. More direct and connected plus the alcantara feels good in my hand. I should have done this a long time ago.

Btw, I met one of you guys with the black e92 at the shop... which one of you was it again? Wanted to chat for a bit but you left right away.

Because a few people have forgotten the point of this thread...

I'm not going to replace my turbos myself especially if its covered under warranty and I don't have a build thread so decided to post it here as it seemed like the most relevant thread. Sorry if that bothers you.

bomiheko 04-10-2014 05:06 PM

So you were able to get your turbos covered under warranty at Performance One? I know they are owned by AutoWest, but wasn't sure if they could do warranty as well. Since my car is tuned, taking it to Performance One is probably better than the dealership. Btw, did you have to pay for the walnut blasting? Performance One was quoting $700, wondering if yours was the same.

hud 91gt 04-10-2014 05:07 PM

Oil change, changed plugs, noticed loose spark plug wire. Crimped it a little until I get in a new set. Now she runs on all cylinders! Brake overhaul tomorrow!

No, I have an aftermarket warranty and Performance One did the work for me. The walnut blast cost me $200 because they were already working on the engine so no need to charge for re/re.

How're your turbos holding up?

maxxxboost 04-10-2014 05:49 PM

Lowered car on hr sport springs with koni shocks, 75mm stud conversion, 19" bbs lm reps and an alignment. Feels good
