M5 for $14k? Realistically how much would that thing cost to run? |
I don't think $14k is realistic for a post facelift M5. How much it cost me to run my M5?: For my M5 (at a baseline condition, ie everything works and runs well), I would say it cost me about $500 for fluid changes and filters. I send half a dozen samples (from engine, all the way to the diff) to Blackstone every year and change when they tell me to (they get so many samples and I feel they can advise me better than I can do myself or even BMW, which don't collect the data). I store my cars indoors with temperature range from 5C to 20C, I would also add, UV and temperature variances makes a huge difference on the life of your plastic components, so consider that because as well in your ownership, as a lot of cooling parts are plastic. The fluid replenishing rate is once every 2 years about 5k driven annually. $300 for valve adjustments, plugs and gaskets etc, annually. All DIY. I don't track my car, I don't modify suspension in my car either, just replace them with OE (Castrol, ATE and BMW fluids and Mahle filters) parts. The only mod I recommend for pre MOST bus cars is replace the diff with a Quailfe LSD, just for the boundary pushing factor. However I had spent roughly $1k on M5 (mostly S62) specific tools and references.. cam lock etc. Another $1k for spare parts, I have a spare rebuilt VANOs set (hence my title, as I was caught out without spares once and paid big), rebuilt brake calipers, hoses and tanks all ready to go. So insurance and gas (PON 91) are my major expenditures. (I edited out Tires because I just checked and I am still on my second set after 8 years). I don't think M cars are too expensive to own or DIY, as long as you also own BMWs (so you can amortize the parts and tools) and know how they work. The big difference M vs non M from owner + DIYer perspective is you have to be prepared to pop off the valve cover and access head and gaskets quite regularly, vs for non M it is usually just the filters. If you are squeamish with that, be prepared to pay huge bucks. V8 has an advantage vs the I6 as it is not nestled in so far back, even though you have to get 2x the gaskets, it is easier to work with spatially. Big work surface is always great, DIY M ownership is not recommended for communal parking situations, I find removing the hood saves a lot of time on big jobs. Realistically, BMWs commonly just use only 5 socket sizes, 3 torx sizes, 2 bit sizes out of a tool set, so it is not about building up general tools but gaining specific knowledge and tools. Quote:

Washed the car and relocated my plate. I wasn't happy with how it was attached previously (L- brackets attached to one of the fins in the grill) http://www.revscene.net/forums/membe...4292252868.jpg |

Over the past couple days I took out the steering rack, adjusted, cleaned and painted it. Installed new bellows, outer tie rods, and poly rack bushings. Can you spot it? It looks out of place with all the other greasy dirty junk in there. Previously it blended right in :p https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-N...no/photo-6.JPG |
