So some jackass stole one of the mirror caps off my car for some reason. Called my dealership buddy, he said they're $88 each + paint! Online, I found them for $40 but still unpainted so I went on the golfmk6 forums and found these gloss black ones off eBay, which everyone said fit just like OEM.
And they do! $85 shipped, ordered on Monday and already here from Hong Kong!

Drove it for the first time! I bought a non-running FC3S a couple weeks ago and it's up and running now, for the first time in over a year (previous owner had it sitting in his back yard).
Pretty stoked to start working on getting it looking nice, now that it's all mechanically looked after.

Ripped apart the entire drivers side below the dash, removed the stupid alarm/starter (fuck alarms), started some of the wiring for the new gauges and cleaned up the old mess I did quickly to get the wideband in, wired up my intercooler sprayer and prepped a bunch of the wiring for 1 of the amps that's going in. I also swapped out the deck for the one from my GTS until I can sort out my amp situation.
This wasn't even as far down as it got:

So I decided to do some basic maintenance on my car today. First simple thing was replacing one of the T's in the windshield washer line (the rear end blew out and was spraying washer fluid directly into the engine bay). Second task was to try and fix the SID in the car. Pixel lines kept going appearing and disappearing at random, which seems to be a fairly typical issue with these things. Dismantled the whole unit, cleaned up the connections to the screen and put some foam tape to help increase pressure on them. Didn't do the complete trick, but at least there are fewer "dead" pixel lines visible now.
Lastly was to tackle the spark plugs. Easy job, of course, and wasn't expecting any issues.
However.
On the left is a set of NGK's that came out of the engine. On the right is a set of Autolite's that went in. See anything wrong with the picture?
Some how there appeared to be zero interference damage from someone's previous mistake. Considering that those NGK's seem to belong to only Chrysler Group vehicles, I've no idea how they got installed into the Saab.
On the plus side, the car runs a fuck ton smoother now.
Oh, and finally got my boost gauge. Now I just need to find a spot in the car to install it...

Oh. I also found out today that the Direct Ignition Cassette that's currently installed in the car is the incorrect unit. Apparently it came out of a newer model 2L Turbo and even though it technically works with cars running an older ECU, it should only be temporary as it will cause a bunch of issues. So, yeah... Looks like the previous owner's lack of dielectric grease causing the boots to cook on the DIC is only half of my problem. |

Went to reinstall the foglights on the GTFour and snapped one of the mounting bolts, I couldn't find a replacement anywhere so I gave up and cobbled something together to mount the light back on the bracket. Went to mount the lights back on the bumper and due to the fact that I goofed up when I took them off I had to pull the entire bumper assembly to reinstall them.
On the plus side once I got it all back together the rewiring I did to the foglights worked (hooked it to an OEM fog light button stead of the crummy toggle switch it had before)

Something I have to do almost every year like clockwork as soon as warranty runs out... changing the oil pressure sensor. but at least it's an inexpensive part. |

Changed my oil today. Couldn't get my oil filter off for whatever reason. I hand tightened it the last oil change and today, won't budge at all. I'm not sure if it's because the car was warm causing it filter to expand.
Nevertheless going to try again tomorrow when the car is cold and if all else fails, gonna use a oil filter wrench. I don't get why it's so tight when I hand tightened it the last oil change a few months ago. Car noob |

Invest in a good pair of waterpump/channel lock pliers. Indispensable for oil filters, single piston calipers and around the house.

Literally pushed it into the garage with a friend since I'm waiting on my fuel pump and filter to come in the mail. Other than that my new speakers came in for the front so swapped those out with w/e the hell was going on there earlier.

Drove it to Mission, did the fall novice TSD, and drove it back home. Discovered an oil leak under maintained boost (hills) so the going was a bit slow and I may be slightly deaf now.

This thread has inspired me to buy a beater as a first car and work on it myself.

BUT ONLY BECAUSE I GOT IT FOR THE PRICE OF PEANUTS | Nothing wrong with buying a relatively cheap car. My Saab, now... that was dirt fucking cheap, considering the same year/model is still selling for 6-8 times what I paid for it. However, even buying a $2000 Civic or a $5000 328is isn't necessarily a bad thing, especially if someone has bought it to learn how to work on vehicles. If you're trying to flip a car, sure... do it on the cheap. But as a learning tool, nah... just buy something that looks like a good deal.

Or buy something that is easy to work on. It's very discouraging to try to learn when the car fights you every step of the way.
