Are they really as loud as they say? I won a pair a while back but I haven't gotten around to installing them yet.

With daily lows finally hovering around 9-10C, it was time I ground down the metal tabs in the rear so this could happen...teaser for now...daylight pics to come.

My phone's camera has turned to shit, wtf. Anyway, changed the oil today while one of the mechanics put in new clutch fluid.

LOL, I meant in the CMC. Oil went where oil was supposed to go

And yeah, after the last snapped belt, everything has been running smooth. There was a small oil leak on the valve cover and oil pan, but those have since been remedied. 12,000 km on the new engine now

With the Audi ready for TIG welding, I decided to spend some time on the '58 beetle project. First up was pulling the fuel tank, draining the brake system and swapping out the brake master which I was sure was bad. Then re-bled the system, and once again decided I'm an idiot for waiting 18 years to buy a Motive Power bleeder. Once the system was air-free, I realized I still had zero pedal...and went back to checking the adjustment of the brake shoes on all four corners. Sigh. I'm an idiot. With the brake shoes re-adjusted I had brakes, and that means the master which is now in the garbage was probably perfectly fine. Doh!

The brake master was the final item to create a running/driving chassis...but the car is still sitting as a bare shell. Buying all the correct interior items isn't in the budget until late spring (stupid Audi project), but I do have black which could be used. So today I got the carpets, seats and half the door panels in. Installed seat-belts, which required custom work since they didn't have them in '58, and then dropped it off the axles stands.

Took it for it's first spin tonight, and tuned the carburetor. Absolutely hilarious. The brakes are exactly as they should be, which means they are beyond terrible. 4-wheel drums, of the narrowest design VW ever had, are (by today's standards) completely useless. But, hey! It drives hands-off straight, and feels every bit as good as a restored Beetle should.

Apparently this post will have a lack of progress photos, my phone won't connect at the moment. Will update with photos later.

My first time vinyl wrap something. I am trying the 2 bumper pieces first, the right corner looks ghetto and wrinkle as hell. Not sure how to do it properly.

So this is the loop we've decided to make out of the trip. The /drive filming is just the perfect excuse for such a trip.

Malibu for filming + because canyon roads, Las Vegas- shooting pre-ban automatic weapons, + Driving a 991 GT3, Gallardo, and 458 on a track, also because Vegas, Arizona/Idaho/montana because why the hell not, Calgary to visit family, then meander on home. Actual trip itself is 5,500km, + driving a LOT in Malibu and general zipping around the various cities, will be close to 7,000KM in nine days.

What is the story behind this/premise of the episode/what they are doing with your car?
Road trip sounds awesome, especially the supercars in vegas part.
P.S. tell Matt farrah Guy fieri wants his personality back.

More classic car fun!

Finishing up some minor details on the '58. First up was the window regulator on the driver's side. The one I had in the car (rusty version) was popping out of the window channel every time you try and lower the window. A friend came up with a pair of NOS units, so I swapped that over last night. The glass is supposed to come all the way out of the door before you pull the regulator, but I knew I could cheat with the glass all the way up. Unfortunately I'm an idiot and didn't check the clearances well enough when I lowered the glass. Ended up bending the S*** out of the metal channel. Massaged that back with multiple plier sets, hammers and dies...only to discover that the channel is mounted 1.5" too far forward for the new regulator. It works, but comes dangerously close to sliding out of the channel half way up. Sigh.

The clutch cable is too long for the car, which is a bit odd. The chassis is definitely '58, and a change in transmission doesn't change the clutch cable length...so something is peculiar. Even more odd is that I'm using the shortest cable you can buy. Rather than have the clutch releasing just barely off the carpet, I dropped by a buddies lathe and cut up some stainless steel. The spacer will allow me 1.5" at the end of the cable for extra clutch adjustment, and we cut a nice ball seat in the end so that it won't bind up.

The change was instantly noticeable...and much, much better to drive. Worst part is I actually have to work, I want to go on a roadtrip!
