is acetone safe on clear coat/paint?

godwin 07-14-2015 09:59 PM

No, it is not safe on paint / clear coat especially on plastics. What are you trying to do?

Sawzall vs RX-7

Finally got the quarter panel of the parts car. It was easy after I figured out the right route. Perhaps could have taken more of the frame. The car is almost totally parts-out now and going for scrape. Irony is: it probably could have been put back on the road for less cost than cleaning up the 3.5-4.0 grade RX-7s that have come in recently.

Why are you hacking up RX7's?

ICBC Write-off

It was an ICBC write-off that had been largely parted out. It was on its way to the crusher, I'd tried to save as much as I could. It is a shame the cars are being written off so easily. No place to keep the stripped shell. If you know where I can find cheap storage (say $50/mo.) for a whole car/shell let me know.

The only picture I managed to take before my phone died.

Color turned out super nice for something that was truly experimental and unplanned, can't wait to see it in the daylight :fullofwin:

Alignment after adjusting my height. Inner tie rod came loose while doing my toe. Tightened as much as i can and took a cruise to a audi meet. Not a bad night.

Installed an oil pressure gauge, tried to match the OEMish kind of look and color

Replaced the white push start with the GTR push start to match my quick release. The OEM one on the 370z lights up a very pale orange which I wasn't too fond of

Auto paint is a mix of solids (pigments) suspended in a carrier (solvent), when you apply paint, the curing mechanism is the volatile nature of the solvent - the solvent essentially evaporates into the air (gasses off) leaving the solids behind. So, when you take a strong solvent like acetone and apply it to your paint, it will reverse the curing process by softening the paint, so yes it is potentially dangerous.

However, acetone can be used safely over paint, test it out in a hidden corner first with light application and see if clear/paint lifts immediately... depending on the type of paint, how long ago it was applied, you might be surprised with just how resilient the existing paint is to the acetone.

Note that clear coat tends to cure to a higher hardness level than color coats, if you apply acetone directly to color coat I can almost guarantee the paint will start to soften instantly.

The ITR engine bay finish held up really well against the acetone, but I was being very careful... using only enough force and time to remove the wax coating.. not sitting there rubbing the acetone into the paint for 30 seconds at a time.

My fancy dancy in-dash boost gauge that replaces the stock unit in the gauge cluster doesn't work, so I re-installed my old ProSport boost gauge. I broke the mounting point from where I had it before, so right now it's just taped down on the steering column cover, lol. But at least I know that the car is over-boosting and causing the ECU to cut off fuel once it goes over 12 PSI lol. Now I need to wire in the fuel cut defender I've had laying around for 2 years haha.

On the left in the picture is the shifter linkage from an Audi S3. 60 bucks for a shorter throw in the Golf was worth an hour to do it, even though adjustment was a pain in the ass (tried following the write ups and found myself with binding shifts and no movement, eyeballing it actually worked after messing with the "proper" method and getting nowhere). It really does feel better, not too dramatic, but the tighter feel is how it should have come from factory.

Hunted for OEM+ interior bits for the S10 in Chilliwack. Scored some nice deluxe sun visors from a ZR2 Blazer, and new door panels. Thinking of going back and tearing the roof console out with the chassis harness to retrofit into the S10.

1st atf drain & fill...111k and the old one looked pretty good for almost 10 years from factory
it already shifts more smoothly but possibly just placebo

1st PS drain & fill...omg the old one was poop-coloured. I followed the manual to the tee but it sounds whinier than before, is that supposed to go away after the fluid goes through the whole system or did I just introduce too much air into it? Manual says to drain the return hose by turning it lock to lock a few times, doesn't that run the pump dry? after fill it said to do lock to lock again to get the air out.

also changed all interior bulbs to LED, because rice. Most aren't working despite inserting in both orientation..haven't looked at the fuse yet.

Busy weekend in Squamish...

Future Beetle Project
- Pulled Subaru 2.5RS from donor car
- Pulled wiring harness from donor car

'58 Beetle
- Adjusted link pins on front end
- Replaced rear suspension bushing
- Adjusted timing...again. Points are slipping.

MK1 Escort Rally Car
- Built dry sump tank frame
- Made templates for dry sump tank mount and fuel pump/filters mount

'71 Rally Bug
- Broke the carbon fibre shift rod between shifter and transmission. Oops.

Random guy from Mexico's Van
- Two of my buddies and I found Raphael, Dana and his van at McDonalds, they'd been there for 36 hours trying to rebuild the motor out of the parts they had left from two failed engines. We showed up shortly after he got the frankenstein engine together and it sounded terrible. So, we invited them back to my house where my buddies and I dropped the motor out, tore it down almost to the core and fixed/repaired/replaced what we could. I have a large selection of spares, but not everything is bus compatible. 4.5 hours later, the bus fired up and Raphael was VERY happy to hear a smooth running engine.

...and off they went!
https://scontent.cdninstagram.com/hp...02556977_n.jpg

The motor has a bad valve guide (I didn't have any spare heads) but the work we did will definitely get them to Seattle or further, and we gave them a bunch of recommendations for good engine guys and used motors down south.

That made me smile! Nice job. I followed a black beetle yesterday which i thought was the '58, over the Lions Gate and through Stanley park. Was that you?

CCA-Dave 07-20-2015 11:11 AM

Negative, I stayed in Squamish yesterday to work on the Escort.

...Oh, I should add I gave Raphael and Dana a copy of this book for the rest of their adventure. The first half of the title being the important part!
