jeezus that looks like what my vw fsi head had, except there was so much buildup you could only see the stem and not much else

All I can say good job to take on all this. I am more afraid to work on the BMW because everything is just so much more expensive to fix when something goes wrong compared a Japanese car. But good on you doing everything hands on.
Thanks man! I will try to Diy as much as i can

This.! pretty much all #35i cars n54,n55 motor are pretty tainted in my eyes now. Im always gonna think they all got carbon build up

Direct injection flaw Im sure the cleaning is the same method!
for mine it was a chisel. i've seen others use a dental pick.

I dont think those would suffice with mine even with the walnut blast alone it took me hours. Once i made the decision of using cleaner it was a game changer for me

Can someone explain in a nutshell...
What walnut blasting is, and why when I look it up it's only on BMW's? Is this something anyone should consider for their cars?
I get that somehow you're using the shell bits to remove the gunk, but somehow you shoot it at the valves, and it doesn't get into the cylinders? How do you avoid a mess?

This is typically only required on cars with direct injection. With DI, fuel does not wash over the intake valves, so there can be carbon build up. This process is pretty common on the Mazda, Audi/VW, BMW DI platforms. Port injection cars typically don't need to do this.
You need to have some kind of sealed adapter so you can blast with the media gun but still have a shopvac suck up the media. The crank needs to be turned so that the valves are closed.
When I had mine done, we used an old radiator hose, drilled a hole for the blaster and used a shopvac on the other end.
I don't know about you guys, but I did some Vdyno 4th gear plots before and after and didn't get any gains at all. Car drove the same, compression test before/after the same, vaccum readings the same. I run methanol injection, EGR delete and an OCC, so perhaps that may have helped with reducing carbon build up. Some of the pics of Audi/VW's look nasty.

I guess if you have valves that look this this, then you would see benefits
Did some wrenching, put on the OEM A-Spec kit. Was definitely the hardest install ive ever done but a good learning process

Ive put in probably 9-10 hours or so just the walnut blasting alone .
4-5 hours being the first intake hole :bellyroll:bellyroll
The first hour so 2nd guessing my self if the valve is fully closed or not
Coming from honda you turn the crank to play with the valves manually i couldnt apply that to the 1er since there more work to be done if i go that route.lol
I finally stop being paranoid and did the starter way and it worked like a charm!
The reason it took me hours on the first one was because i had not exp just yet! It had to follow how everyone does it from the DIY
So i probably walnut blasted that hole 5x and still alot of carbon build left. I decided to spray carb cleaner and viola! carbon build soften and the next walnut blast clean everything right of! I should have figure that out sooner but like i said no exp so i had to follow step by step!
2nd time around i applied what i learned from the first and i was able to cut the time and effort!
I did my own method this time instead of walnut blastingfrom the getgo i soak it with carb cleaner and break it down first
This is after the first walnut blast
I was able to cut the walnut blasting to just 2-3x
by the 3rd i felt like a pro at the point had the perfect rhythm going
I use a combination of tools
I use a siphone to suck excessive amount of the carb cleaner and carbon.
Seeing as its combustive i was scared of making the shop vacuum bomb!.haha
until i hit cylinder 6 and broke the tool!!
I got to comfortable with it lol next time would opt for the aluminum version.
After its all done my my bones, joints and muscles are pretty much in pain
This helped a bit ahah
But its totally worth it knowing that the car will drive even better!
Decided to stop dicking around and put everything back.lol
Spoiler!
Checked the oil filter housing gasket job i did last year. Its still good!
You know that saying " you learn something new everyday"
Welp i learned that the hood latch is perfect hook to hang a work light!
Being as this was my first time and this particular job when done wrong can be mighty costly.
I was scared to start the car up. Legit my heart was beating fast.haha
I was so relieved when it did start whewww!
But for a moment i thought i mess something up because it was louder than how i remembered it!
First thought came to mind was "oh no perhaps i blasted walnut in the combustion chamber
Then i realized that i havent put the valve plastic cover yet. lol
Yup like to some other cars the plastic cover is just that a plastic cover to make the bay nicer
But to the bmw it also dampens the sound of the engine to make it quieter because direction injection (loudness)
Overall experience i will rate it @ 7/10 in difficulty because first time
but just like with anything 2nd time around will a breeze

The MK1 Escort rally car has the rear suspension changed from leaf springs to a 4-bar linkage with coil-overs. The four bar link boxes hang down below the car in a way which makes them perfect targets on rallies for rocks and other damage:
So, using all the skills taught to me in kindergarten I made some shapes...and welded them together.
Then attached them to the car.
The motor is trans were then put back in, and I started brainstorming the custom transmission mount I need to make. Also need to add some gussets to the car, so I cut out some crazy shapes from some steel, and will take them over to a buddies for bending before welding them in. Warwick (car owner) sorted out the shape/style for the transmission tunnel and made me a bristol-board mock-up of what he'd like to see. 10 days(?) until it supposedly leaves for the paint shop. Right.

Transmission mount on the Escort project is now complete. Didn't want to buy 20ft of tubing just to make the bushing mounts, so instead I cut down and bored out a 2.25" solid bar on the lathe into the size I needed.
Here's about 1/2 way into the machining of the first piece:
That's either a really cool new skateboard truck, or the beginnings of the mount. Bushings and my now completed custom tubing.
A bit of milling machine work, more welding and a few seconds with the arbor press later.
Everyone likes going back to grade 1 art class, on their back, under a car...
Plates and ears tacked into place. Following this photo, I cut the plates off the car and welded the ears to the plates on the bench.
Then bolted the plates back up, and welded them to the car where I could reach.
So now the engine and transmission can come out once again, so that I can weld all the way around the mounting plates.
Picked up front bumper from Jetway. Pretty spot on with paint matching even on a white pearl.
Threw a neochrome front decal on

Wrapped the front grille and trim in glossy carbon

Put everything back on the car

Have you thought about leaving the upper portion of your grille chrome or paint it white to match the hood? I've seen some TL guys leave it, some paint/wrap it black.
I love that neochrome decal
