Vacuumed the car. It was full of leaves and dirt from my drunk friends lying on the lawn.
Should have known better to drive my drunk friends home. Thank god I carry plastic bags in my car, or I will have pukes on my seat, and I will hate myself forever.
Fuck this. I will be partying and drinking next year so I don't deal with this horseshit.

Took off my GT rear wing and reinstalled, much better than before. It took more effort than I hoped. Untitled by Chris West, on Flickr

Rally bug is up on axle stands for re-prep and upgrades. It's done 200,000km in four years, and as usual I have some ideas for improvements. Started stripping it down and creating a list.$
One of the things I need to change is the stock pedal set. I've done various modifications along the way, but the key point is it has failed twice. One of the failures was the brake clevis pin, leaving us with only the hand brake on a twisty mountain downhill in Colorado. The last modification for the pedals was to convert them from cable clutch to hydraulic, and to do that I stuffed a master cylinder inside the tunnel. It was such a brutal job to get it all lined up and attached, I promised myself the next time it came out I would replace the pedals with a proper pedal box.
Well, the accelerator pedal setup keeps breaking...so out came the pedals.
...and, this is where the problems start. Measuring out the car, there isn't a pedal box made that will fit. Surprisingly it's not the distance away from the seat, or fitting the master cylinders, it's the width. I always figured it would be squeezing in the masters, and I could use the Tilton master-under-foot setup if needed, but it's wider than I thought and won't fit.
I do have an older Tilton setup with the masters behind the pedals, but it's too wide to fit in the car. I could raise it 1.5", above the heater channel, but then my legs don't fit. Well, as a good buddy of mine is fond of saying, "God hates a coward..." and so, here we go!
With 3/4" taken out of the pedal set, I can get it just narrow enough to fit the car. A bonus I didn't expect was the ability to fit a proper dead-pedal in, which is nice. With the dead pedal, however, the pedals do end up 1/2" closer to the driver...so I'm going to have to space out the steering wheel and move the shifter and hand brake. It's not the end of the world, but adds to the work level.
I love a good night in the shop when you lose track of time. Looked up to check if it was dinner time, as I was feeling a little hungry...whoops, it's midnight. :P
My second front wheel hub was delivered today so I put it all back together after tearing everything apart last weekend. The difference was huge, all of what I thought was road noise is now gone. Originally I thought the all-in-one bearing/hub unit that bolts on was going to be a pain but it was so much easier than having to pull the assembly and then take it to a shop and hope that the hub and knuckle weren't damaged.

Picked up some custom 16mm titanium spacers, a set of white line springs and weather tech floor mats. Also got a snell approved helmet and signed up for ice racing in January. Pretty stoked for that.

Hey Chris, did you order them online? Did you have to send your oem ones in? I’ve been playing with the idea of having a set done in the accent blue that the RS uses on stitching/calipers
Attempted to replace compliance bushings on my TSX. My homemade tool didn't work to press out the old bushings. Should have just bought new control arms. ha.
Attempted to replace rear upper control arm on TSX due to a service bulletin which says right rear camber can be out of spec with stock arm. Last alignment showed just out of spec so I decided to replace with adjustable arm as service bulletin says. Found the limit of my 3/8" drive ratchet with a 3' extension on the handle. Oops. Didn't quite notice that nut was welded on.
Replaced all suspected "fake" ACDelco (Amazon purchased) LS coils on the Z with genuine expensive ACDelco coils. Hoped for a fantastic change and amazing idle. No change. ha.
Over all a failure of a day on all projects, but I still enjoyed myself. ha

These were OEM on the GT/LTW so I bought the whole assembly new from BMW.
I’ve seen places that will rebuild/install belts on your OEM retractors, but this was the way I believed I’d get the absolute safest product.
That said I’d trust certain vendors to do it properly, but this was as easy as walking into the dealership and spending a fucking ridiculous amount of money.

It was pretty cool, because I believe other than the oil pump, lightweight aluminum doors (which I can not get since they are incompatible with side air bags)and removal of sound deadening, my car has every other part on it that set the LTW apart from a regular m3, and has it all in a better colour. It’s cool that my car has become nearly identical to a car that’s worth 4x as much.

After a week away, driving an MGB in California, I returned to find I still wasn't entirely happy with where the pedals were going to sit. Checking over the technical drawings for the Tilton reverse pedals, I realized I could get them to potentially fit the car better than the set I have. Before dropping $800 though, I printed out a full-size birds-eye-view for testing...
I contemplated cutting the areas marked in yellow...to see how much better the current pedal set I have would fit.
After playing around with it for a while, I realized that I would need to do major surgery to the heater channel in order to make the Tilton master-under-foot pedal set worth the upgrade. My next beetle will use them for sure, as I can cut the body and pan up as part of the pre-paint work. In order to cut up the Rally Bug however, I'd have to deal with the seal in between the body and pan. It's major surgery that will probably require removing body from pan. So...lets make the current pedals fit as best we can.
I cut out the metal marked in yellow...and then continued cutting, and cutting, and cutting just a little more.
Pedals are as far forward as I'll be able to get them on this car. The green tape shows where the $800 600-series pedals would be, so I'd only gain 1" on this build. On my next beetle, however, I'll be able to get the 600-series set another 4-6" further forward.
As the pedal set currently sits, the base of the gas pedal is about 1/2" forward from where the base of the factory pedal is. BUT the race pedal is vertical, which will change once the brakes are setup and bled. I'll set the throttle pedal angle to match the brake pedal under braking, so that it's easy to heel-toe. It's comfortable as it is, and should improve somewhat.
As an added bonus, I will definitely have enough space for a dead-pedal. That's a nice score.
A leak? No, I think you just discovered the previous owner checked the portable-pool options box!
-Dave
The stupid thing is that the PO actually told me the tail light gasket needs to be replaced, but when I picked up the car, the left taillight was falling out from the inside.
Fixed that (with duct tape) and I thought the problem was fixed. Guess not.

Despite whatever Red Green taught you, duct tape has no place in vehicle maintenance. While it might appear to be a good solution, it actually rots and causes more problems down the road.
