Sergeant Jantzen says, even though the owner wasn't driving, she is ultimately responsible and faces the following penalties:
•A violation ticket, charged with driving without due care and attention - $368 penalty.
•Excessive speeding - $483 penalty.
•No insurance - $598 penalty.
•That totals $1,449 in penalties.
The mom is responsible for those penalties just because she is the owner of the bike? I don't like that.

Somebody has to be. From The Sun article:
Quote:
"The Motor Vehicle Act has sections in it that require the owner to be responsible for the conduct of the vehicle and to be responsible for the person who operates the vehicle," Jantzen said.
Without something like this, the mother could just say, "nope, wasn't me" and nobody would be responsible for anything.

For the sake of argument, what if someone stole a motorcycle and proceeded to ride like that. If they can't prove who was riding it, is the owner responsible for the penalties?

You wouldn't have reported it stolen? Someone heists your bike and you just shrug it off?

Including filing a police report? So then you're off the hook for what someone else does with it.

thats the first thing i'd do, followed by trying to track it down, and negotiating with the thief with a pipe.

The only outcome I see of this is " I lent the bike to a guy" "who was the guy" "I don't remember" and then he walks away free and clear.
Should impound and sell of this bike. I could use a spare head and block for all the YEC parts I have :P

And that's exactly why they have such provisions.
