New safety restrictions for BC motorcyclists

The BC government has announced new safety restrictions for motorcyclists.
Motorcycle fatalities went up by up by 57% between 1996 and 2010.
Solicitor general/safety minister Shirley Bond is saying new helmet rules will help lower the death tolls.
As of June 1st, all motorcycle riders and passengers in BC must wear helmets that meet international safety standards.
That means your novelty helmets, your skull caps and skid lids will no longer be allowed as of June 1st, on pain of a $138 penalty.
There are some new rules as well as children on motorcycles, they must be able to put their feet on foot pegs or flood boards, or they can't ride.
One other note, the government will be bringing limitations on the power of motorcycles that new riders can ride but they will be after a period of consultation over the next several months.

i like that idea but then they would have to reduce the price to make it accessible to more people.. although that would probably be done by govt subsidization.

So they have to save for the bike longer or settle for a less costly one.

I wonder if there's any information correlating the fatality rate with the type of helmet. I would think that most of the deaths are riders with full face helmets.

Penalties

I'm reading this as:
If you remove your feet from the pegs to stretch during a long ride = stunt riding = Bike impoundment.

Harsh, no?

^ I guess if it's anything like having to answer a cell phone, you gotta pull over and turn off your vehicle.

Same thing for stretching out your leg. Pull over?

thats for the passenger, not the rider

Passengers must be seated behind the operator astride the passenger’s seat with their feet on foot pegs or the floorboards at all times (even when the motorcycle is stopped – e.g., at an intersection), or be properly seated in a side car.

Well then, passenger stretches legs = stunt riding = bike impoundment.

hmm whats interesting is if your at an intersection, if passenger and operator need feet on footpegs at all times even when stopped, what do you do at a stop light

Maybe they expect you to put out your kickstand at intersections so you and your passenger can sorta lean on it and keep your feet on the pegs

ICBC has since amended the wording on the new seating laws. They are as follows:

astride the passenger’s seat with their feet on
footpegs or the floorboards, or be properly seated
in a side car.

As the motorcycle operator, you’re responsible
to ensure passengers younger than 16 are properly
seated. Any passengers, including children, who
can’t reach footpegs are not permitted to ride as
passengers on your motorcycle. Failure to comply
with seating laws may result in a fine or vehicle
impoundment
